My wife is amazing

I have mentioned enjoying riding the trails with my friend. So she decided to surprise me today when I was picking up a gift card for my friends birthday.

She saw a Trek 3500 Disc and said she would pick it up for me under one condition, that I'd not ask about getting another motorcycle for a good while. I agreed. I mentioned the desire for a 29er, and she said that I should get something I'd want, so I wouldn't wish I got something else later. I've wanted a 29er for a while because they have said the ride is so smooth. So I looked in the corner of the shop and noticed a Specialized Hardrock Sport 29er. Thirty minutes later I was strapping it to the back of my car to take back home. It has SRAM shifters, preload adjustable front suspension with a lockout, those sweet 29" wheels and some nice cable operated disc brakes.

A good while to me is maybe half an hour or 45 minutes.

I have a similar bike. Although I don't have the sport version. No disc brakes for me.

Congratulations---That's a really nice bike. You could do rim tape since you have disc brakes.

I could, but it would just get scratched up on the trails. I think I'll just keep it stock.

I have a similar bike also. 29er Rockhopper. Got the mid level version 2 years ago. Has the cable disc brakes and a wild kind of WWII design theme. Really fun bike that I do a lot of different things with. Love the 29er wheel size also.

And my wife got me this one for my 30th birthday, great gift!

Hope you're enjoying your new bike!

Here's a pic of mine -

Very nice.
I've never tried a 29'er. My hopes of getting another bike anytime soon are zero, so I'll need a ride report from you.

I have some SPDs on my Cannondale. I'm going to take them off of there and put them on the shelf for now. I told my friend that I'd leave platforms on there for him so he can try it out. It will be a fun trial run, then I'll put on my SPDs and take it out again.

gotta love it when our wives let us have new toys

I remember working at a bike shop when I was a teenager, and 29" wheels were rare. it was all about 26", and dual shocks were starting to get more and more popular. how common are the 29" bikes nowadays?

They are getting to be more common, like the new standard. I must say I see more 26's out there than anything else. Most are hardtails or FS. I don't even think they make full rigid setups anymore. I think all mountain bikes now come with a front shock assy. I'm not sure about Walmart brands, but I know Trek's 3500 ($350) comes with a front shock.
