Nick Wants Some Tips for Riding 600's!
I'm going to take one for a quick spin tomorrow...a 2008 ZX6R. Just up and down the road. The only thing I'm really worried about...is launching. I'm not sure how much of a difference there will be in the torque from a 11.2 hp to a 100+ hp bike. Especially on a supersport. I know that there is a HUGE difference in power...I just don't know how it will feel? You know? Any quick tips so I don't flip the bike or stall too many times?

You will probably need to pull in the clutch sooner when coming to a complete stop. As the higher gearing will not allow you to go too slow.

Did you take the MSF course? "Power walk" the bike to find the friction zone in the clutch. Be extra sensitive on the throttle - wide open will probably get you near 100mph in first gear. The throttle most likely has a smaller turn to get to WOT too.

Before doing any moving, let it idle and get a feel for the clutch and the friction zone. Then get a feel for how to keep the throttle so the engine stays at like 2500 and then work it together. Same method for driving anything new with a clutch. Figure the parts out separately, then put it together.

It's not really a big deal. I just rode a "real bike" for the first time a few weeks ago. A buddy of mine just bought a ZX6-RR, I tried to talk him into getting a sensible bike, cause he's only been riding a few weeks but whatever.
Anyway, if you can handle your bike with no problems then the 600 shouldn't be much trouble, and the throttle really isn't that sensitive, you'll just be using a lot less of it. For me the hardest thing was the slow speed maneuvering. Ir wasn't nearly as easy to ride at slow speeds as the ninjette. So be careful not to dump it in the driveway, cause that would be embarassing.  I was glad that I got to ride his bike, because I've always wondered what the SS bikes are like. In the end it didn't leave me wanting. The power is awesome, you almost don't need to shift, but illegal speeds come in no time. I noticed the extra weight the whole time, and in the end it just felt like more work to ride than my bike. I think that if I owned one I would lose my license, because I would want to drive it like the 250. You really have to hold back to not be going obnoxiously fast on one of those bikes. Have fun, and if your adventurous with the throttle, hold on.  BTW, rev matched downshifts sounded awesome, his bike has a Yoshimura pipe on it. |

nick, the big thing youll notice is that you dont need to use the throttle. WOT on your 2 stroke will feel about like 1/16th throttle. but even then, the zx has much more low end grunt. you dont have to rev it high at all to get a good amount of power. i would suggest trying a few takeoffs withoout throttle just clutch then start using a little bit of throttle until you are used to it... then try doing some wheelies, oh yeah camera on.
the other thing youll notice is you wont slide around. sliding can be good on dirt but you dont really want to slide on asphalt for the most part. lean with the bike instead of letting the bike do the work like on your dirt bike. its kinda natural to let a dirt bike lean more than you when it kicks out but dont do that with a street bike... because its not kicking out. lean into the turn or at least stay with the bike. also theres not really much forward/back movement on the seat like there is on a dirt bike

If you get into trouble, squeeze both levers....its that simple.
The biggest difference you will notice is that throttle response will be much quicker. |

So, I still haven't been able to ride it yet. But really good tips up there^^^. I know people would make fun of me for saying you can't wreck a wrecked bike lmao! I didn't mean actually 'launching' the bike. I meant just starting moving. Like letting the clutch out and starting to move...

Ahhh nice to see Nick is back with some great questions....
Good advise would be to go to the ZX6 forum and ask them the difference in a 140 dirt bike and a 6R? |

No game is still going! I didn't die cause I didn't ride it yet. I'll end up riding after we put the new fairings on most likely. New fairings aren't OEM, nor are they completely green! They should look great, and am really looking forward to see the bike with rashed and smashed fairings! I don't have a picture before sadly...my camera died and got to work immediatly on the bike. But...I'll get a picture of the broken plastics off the bike to show you the damage from the previous owner.
Here's a short list of what we need for the bike: 1) Front, Left, Tail Fairing (Getting full set) 2)Front and rear tires (Front tire actually has a worn part where it slid sideways on the road (getting Michelin 2ct's most likely) 3) Doing regular maintenance to bike (oil change, filter, clean chain etc). 4) Throttle sticking. Doesn't snap back, and dad is convinced it should lmao I bought some lube and will see if that fixes it (behind his back lol )Can't really think of anything else. Will be getting my license soon by the way!

i have dumped the clutch on a 600 at above 12k.... just have to be going faster than 40mph otherwise you do a backflip

Hi! I haven't ridden it...but I practiced finding the friction zone...and...there isn't one? On my klx...I can 'feel' the clutch engaging. But on the zx...it just gets to the zone without feel. Then it just stalls. Supposed to be that way?

if it stalls even though you are going painfully slow there might be power train issues. it revs up alright with no issue in neutral right?
are you sure its in first gear?
