Why does he do this?

This is a link to a video from the Speed channel. I'm wondering why they sometimes take their inside foot OFF the peg before potting a knee down??? It almost looks like they want to drag a foot at times...

the announcers say its so they don't get passed to close... i'm not sure on that one... iirc i've seen interviews where they say its also so they can feel the slight wobble better when their bike isn't setup right. i heard one interview saying that it also helps to air brake.

They make up a lot of different stories for that, but I'm still inclined to believe that it's just a habit left over from riding dirt.

Reminds me off that N64 game where you ride a Harley and go around beating other bikers with pipes and flails.

Does the word, "BLACK FLAG", ring a bell.

I couldn't understand anything that annoucer said.

They should change the name to Thailand Stupidbike!

I think Rossi started it all. They say it helps them steady the chassis before tipping the bike in.

^^ this

There is an article somewhere with quotes from Rossi himself. He does it for feel, he says "It acts as a ballast under heavy braking".

I got no proof but I would assume from the years of injuries he has had, he started doing this to compensate for something physical as he fought with the bike setup for a while to keep him in the game despite riding while still recovering from injury.

Only he knows for sure I guess.

Rossi was the one who seemed to popularize this, but it was years before he injured himself. Remember, he was the guy that had a many-year streak of never missing a race as he simply never did get injured, and walked away from each of the (rare) inevitable crashes. That's why when he snapped his leg two years ago, there was such a hubbub about how it might affect him afterwards. Some feel that the injury has affected his results as much as the switch to Ducati (the following year).

I remember Gavin (is it spelled that way? lol) once said during the broadcast that he asked Rossi about it and Rossi said it was to relax his leg.

Add that to all the theories.
