Engine seemed seized
I'm working on a 2004 250 and when I went to start it this morning, as I hit the starter motor there was a loud clunk and it wouldn't turn. It sounded like it was getting a half rotation then hitting some resistance and stopping. I tried it in neutral, first gear, clutch in, clutch out. Nothing. I got on the bike and took it off the center stand and it started right up. I checked the oil it's got plenty and it was changed last week. An clue what could have caused this?
Thanks |

I don't suppose you've pulled the seat and checked the battery? If it's an aftermarket or taller than stock, sitting on the seat may have pressed on a terminal, fixing a crappy connection?
Otherwise, there is nothing else I can think of involving a centerstand and a no-start scenario.

It starts off the center stand.
I could hear the motor pushing even when it was not moving but I'll check for an electrical issue. The problem now seems like it resolved it self because it will start now I'm any position but I'm waiting to see if it's recurring |

I would suspect battery more than anything else. Sounds like you have a cell shorting out. On the stand the acid is at a level, off the stand it's at another level.

You hope it recurs, because otherwise it's lulling you into a false sense of security until your next really long ride when you're 200 miles from home at the bottom of a hill, and it's about to start raining.

Hopefully, it is not the reason in your case, but check this thread out:

It could be hydrolocked.
Thus happens when the carburetor float valve sticks, and/or petcock malfunction, this allows fuel to fill the cylinder. Remove the spark plugs and crank the engine, if it is hydrolocked, fuel will shoot out the spark plug hole. To fix this verify the petcock is operating properly, and check the float needle valves for wear, if in doubt replace, and adjustment of the floats, If no inline fuel filter is present, install one.

I was thinking possible hydrolock as well, or maybe a battery that is on the edge.
Has the oil level risen at any time? I would get a volt meter and check the battery voltage. You should get 12.7V (100% charged) before cranking. Also test it when you hit the button - you should still be in the 10V range. If it drops off more than that the battery is bad. Also check all of the connections if the battery checks out fine. |
