Gear for a female passenger

I convinced my wife to try riding with me but I'm pretty sure she won't love it. My guess is she'll try it twice and that will be the end of it. I won't have her on my bike without proper gear though. The issue is that I don't want to drop a butt load of dough on gear that I will likely be selling a short time later.

I've got her covered on a helmet, but unfortunately she won't fit in my jacket (or fortunately depending on your perspective). My preference is to find a good quality used jacket and boots. I will take her out for a short run in jeans and pick up pants for her if it sticks.

1. Anyone selling women's gear S-M?
2. What have others done in the same situation?

Getting a girl on the back of your bike is very simmilar to convincing your partner to engage in anal sex.

You will want protective gear

You may have to force it for the first few times

You won't want to give it more than 50% as it'll make her very uncomfortable

She may never really like it, but endure it to make you happy

She may surprise you and really love it, yet you doubt that very much

My wife is the reason I've got a Ninja in my garage. Once I convinced her to get on the back of my first bike she wanted to ride

If you were my area, I'd just lend you some gear, but alas, you're across the country. =P Try checking craigslist. I know a lot of guys buy gear for their girlfreinds, then end up having to sell because the chick loses interest.

the correct answer: go buy the best gear you can find at your local cyclegear. bring her with you and have her select the colors she wants. make sure she tries it on and gets gear that fits well. you want the best stuff so she feels safe, plus a nice dainese just feels great and makes you feel kinda badass wearing $1000 worth of cow and roo skin. but anyway, after she decides whether or not she likes it, go back to cyclegear and return the expensive stuff. if she wants to continue, buy some cheap stuff. if she doesn't want to continue, don't buy anything. when they ask why you are returning it, say nothing more than "i didn't like it and want to return it"

100% money back gaurantee. even if the gear is crashed. yes, you read that right. cyclegear takes returns for crashed items if you aren't satisfied with its performance.

Take the wife to buy nice **** and then ask her to return it in exchange for the cheap stuff? I've seen that movie, it ends badly for the wallet. Been looking at some Bilt stuff online prices seem pretty good.

"hey sweet heart, i know you are going to give riding a shot... so for your first ride, i'm going to put you in the worst gear i can find because it is inexpensive. it will be uncomfortable, won't really protect you at all, and you'll look like **** in it" <-- what better way to keep your wife from riding with you?

note, i am a complete whore for gear. i have bought bilt ****. it isn't worth the effort of going to the store to get it. if you want her to enjoy riding with you. make her enjoy preparing to ride. a lot of women like to be stylish because it makes them look good. and a good looking person generally feels better about themselves. anyway, buying her bilt crap is a waste of money.

How small is she? I've got a bunch of womens gear but it is small sizes. I'd be up for letting it go cheap, and its not crappy stuff either.

She's a size S or M depending on the fit. 5' 120lbs. Got anything that'll work?

Scorpion Jazmin Jacket. XS. Might fit depending on how much chest she has. I have a nicer Sedici Torino Mesh Jacket XS also, but that one will be very snug/tight if she has chest.

The scorpion is a bit looser than the sedici

Won't work then, she's quite chesty. Thanks anyway

No no no Sean. I still need to work on that concept with you

Sorry BlackNinja. I don't mean to be rude; I'm aware this is your wife we're talking about. Best of luck getting her to enjoy riding. Take her somewhere for a picnic, that way it's a date, not just sitting on the back of some stupid motorcycle. She'll never understand the joy and calm of riding unless she gets to relax and enjoy the scenery; a picnic helps that, plus it gives you a chance to pause the ride and chat about what she's doing right/wrong on the back. That's what my girlfriend loves doing when we go for rides. She's always like, "OH! I'll bring lunch and we can make it into a picnic in the park!!"

I just laugh when people try so hard to politely talk about boobs.

Haha. Try politely telling your girlfriend that the jacket looks silly on her because of her boobs. It's like a minefield sometimes.

I'd agree with you if I were trying to get her into snowboarding. At least if she didn't like it she can still look cute in the lodge. But if she's scared *hitless she won't be thinking about how much higher her self-esteem is because of the fly boots she's wearing.

Get some grab bars for her, and her ride will be that much more enjoyable.
If they make some for your model bike that is, I got one for my R6 and my girl hates to ride that bike unless it has the bars, mostly due to how aggressive the seating angle is. The bar im talking about mounts to the bolts around the gas cap.

**** gear doesn't feel safe because it isnt. Good gear feels like you could get hit by a car and survive. Which is what it should do. Why would you endanger someone you love by dressing them in something that in fact won't protect them at all like Bilt gear. When you could for free have them use brand new top of the line gear for a week to decide if they like it or not. Buying cheap second hand gear means you are stuck with it and will have to sell it as used again.

@alex.sI have to agree with you to some extent here. I wouldn't let someone I care about ride in crap gear. Also, your whole approach and attitude? Very smart, in my opinion. If everything goes right, the girl won't mind investing in some solid gear instead of the ****y low-end crap.

I'm with alex.s on this. Bilt is cheap for a reason. Also, if this is her first time riding ever, then first impressions will be very important. Cheap gear doesn't feel good on the skin like more premium brands and it definitely isn't going to feel good when you crash.

@Jiggles - You crashed your 1K, now you haz all de monies to bai gear!

Some realistic thoughts

Check local thrift and goodwill stores
You can't control everyone on the road
You can go slow enough that a fall would be minimal injury in cheap gear or gear that doesn't fit 100% perfect
If any of your gear will fit, let her have it.
Augment cheap gear with elbow/knee pads from sporting good store or wal-mart.

And the answer you should have been told from the beginning is borrow some gear from a friend.

Life is full of risks and chances, take some every now and then. You don't drop 5+ big faces on gear for 2 rides, unless you gots phat bank.

You will want protective gear

You may have to force it for the first few times

You won't want to give it more than 50% as it'll make her very uncomfortable

She may never really like it, but endure it to make you happy

She may surprise you and really love it, yet you doubt that very much

I agree that good gear is important and will make her feel better, so it's something to consider. I was scared to ride with my husband, and I'd like to give some suggestions on things other than gear that will make her feel better. Make the first ride short, unless she is feeling OK. Keep the speed down. Before you get on the bike, explain to her the things that will make it a better ride for her: she may feel like she is sliding back when the bike accelerates, how to lean with the bike, how you want her to hold on, come up with a signal like a pat on your back if she needs to stop. Let her know how it will feel if you get passed by a semi or if you ride somewhere where there is a huge cross-wind. If you don't throw it all at her at once, she's more likely to stick with it.

I wouldn't let my husband go over 35 for the first week or so with me on the back. That was about five years ago. Now I have my own Ninja and feel a little sad when I have to take the back seat instead of ride my own bike.
