Purchased OEM cowl has a 1" gap
Ok so I went ahead an ordered the OEM seat cowl for my bike just installed it I noticed a 1" gap between the cowl & bike is this normal? It really doesn't like cool I was hoping for a snug fit to me it looks like a cheap after market piece. My bike is a 250/ 2008 if anyone has pics showing your bike with a cowl I would really like to see if this is normal....
Thank you |

there is a DIY thread somewhere that shows how to do some alterations to make the gap very minimal, I found it when I was considering a cowl and figured I would end up doing the alterations if I got it. I never got the cowl but everything the guy did looked pretty easy.
I don't know where the thread was, but start searching, I don't think it was in the DIY but you could check. The guy had a blue new gen if I remember correctly, so when you find the thread with the pics of the blue new gen with seat cowl that is probably the one I am talking about. good luck. I might search a bit for it if I have time

Heres the best pic i have of the one on my old bike:
I used the rubber bumper parts from the seat. The ones that came with it gave me a similar gap. Hope that helps.

i dont have pictures, but i got a chinese knock-off and i:
1. shaved down my front rubber thinggys by about 1/8 - 1/4" so when i seat the cowl into the locking mechanism i use some slight force to actually lock it in. 2. then i just threw away the rear rubber thinggys. 3. used JB Weld for plastics and increased the size of the plastic peg that sticks out in the rear, i made it bigger by about 1/8" around so it is fatter than before. make sure you score it up beforehand so it becomes rough and has more potential to stay put. 4. (my bike never came with a grommet for the cowl so i ordered one from local dealer) i test fit the cowl into the grommet for it to make sure it was super snug but not too big as to not actually fit into it, then let it cure completely. i wated about 2 days before i used it. 5. stood back and looked at my job well done. on a side note, i did at first use velcro as some users suggested, but i still found that to be too unstable at highway speeds, it kept rattling and freaked me out. my new version is just so amazingly snug that it doeesnt wiggle or move one bit. all done. i am still at work for about 3 more hours, but when i get home i will post some pics. i think in total for extra supplies i paid maybe $6-jb weld, like $7-grommet. but trust me the jb weld is worth it, you never know when you'll need it to repair your plastics. just my $0.02

The OEM cowl on the 250 is terribly designed. Especially the back part that just suppose to pop in with the rubber ring. I find that if you wet the rubber before putting on the cowl it helps secure it better.

If it is really an inch like you describe then I believe that the bracket was installed backwards. There are pegs in the plastic that prevent it from fully seating if installed backwards.
