What's a good rear stand?

I've heard that there aren't a rear stand meant for the 250's or any bikes.
But what do you reckon is a good rear stand?
Looking to buy one cause after a year i am just sick of pushing the bike around to lube my chain .

Pitbull is definitely the best you can get and will be a reliable stand. I had a bike actually bend the hook of a cheaper stand and fall over...

There is only one good rear stand and that is pitbull. Everything else is like holding your bike up with paper machete

Pitbull and T-Rex.

Ignore those cheapy ebay stands, why risk a few bucks for something that isn't built nearly as well.

Think I am gonna get a second hand one tho $139 is out of my budget
One last thing, my bike doesn't have the screw that rear stand catches on. Am i suppose to buy that as well?

Thanks everyone

Spools. Yep. You have to get them separately unless the previous owner of the bike (if any) installed them. Pitbull sells spools too btw.

Nothing wrong with second hand, especially something that lasts like a pitbull stand. Pitbull's rear stands hold either by spools, by rubber arms that go under the swingarm, or both (reversible attachment). You don't have to get spools, but it's a bit more secure. If you get the one that has the reversible attachments, then you can never go wrong

Just throwing it out there, I've heard good things about GPI Industries stands. Looking to get some of these myself, used. Gotta look for all available brands in the used market.

I bought mine at Harbor Freight and it works fine. I had to flip the L-shaped brackets upside down to get it far enough off the floor though. I don't have spools.

Welcome JP!

I have the same stand that I use in my garage. I used to use it in the paddock at the track but.... here is the catch with those. See the 4 hex bolts at the top of each side? Those come loose every now and then. If you only had 1 bike, fine... locktite them and go on with life. But if you need to adjust them for 2 bikes, say a 250 and R6 then it get's a bit more complex.

While the stand works great for both bikes, you want to ensure you tighten those bolts before transit. They have a nasty habit of working themselves out and getting lost somewhere in the 100+ miles between your house and the track.

Ask me how I know.

I use the cheap harbor freight one (cost me 25 bucks on sale, I believe) and it is holding up just fine. I've even sat on the bike on the stand, no problems.

Oh, and it doesn't require spools.

More expensive ones are completely unnecessary.

What are your guys's opinions on the front stand.
Do you use a stand that lifts at the forks? Or a stand that lifts with the pin underneath?

If you want to service the forks, you will need the triple tree stand. Otherwise the fork stand is fine. Triple tree stand is more secure and I prefer it if I'm only going to have one front stand.

I have T-Rex and have no complaints. A bit less expensive than Pitbull.

The front stand is also convertible. Can lift the forks or, with an inexpensive adapter, lift the triple tree.

Going prices for used Pitbull stands are $100 pickup. They're constantly being sold on forums (maybe not here but check with your local forums).

How are the cheap wheels holding up? Noticing the flat spots after the bike sits on it for a bit?

And, judging by your last statement I would expect you have owned other stands?

No flat spots. I've never left it on the stands for more than a few days at a time when doing valve adjusts and other maintenance, so who knows what might happen over time, but if something goes wrong with the wheels I'm sure I can find some new casters for dirt cheap.

And no, I've never owned a more expensive stand, not for the rear, Harbor Freight doesn't sell a front stand so I do have a more expensive one from Cycle Gear, the guy claimed the design was like pitbull, but I don't like it that much. Nothing to compare it too though.

It's just that the rear stand works perfectly, so unless a more expensive one gives benefits like, it goes down on you when you are working on the bike, I don't see the point.

I've had no problems with my cheap-o Venom rear stand. I'm not saying I would recommend it to a track junkie, but for the once in a while garage use it's been solid as a rock. I've moved the bike all over the place while it was up on the stands too, never a wiggle or wobble. I think it's about how you put it together.

Does it compare to a Pit-Bull? - hell no.

I find it comical that you would tell folks more expensive stands are unnecessary when you haven't ever owned one.

The HF stand works for light duty but it's still a cheap stand. The wheels are notoriously crap (probably the largest issue with that stand).

Like others, I prefer to spend a little more on a reputable stand that I don't have to worry about at all. No worries about quality, no worries about longevity, no worries about stability. Resale is also great with Pitbull and T-Rex stands because people know they last.

How so? I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with a better stand, just that the HF one does what is needed from a stand. Thus, anything else is not needed. That's what unnecessary means.
Quote:

The wheels can be replaced. I've not had any problems with mine, and I've had the bike up on the rear stand probably over 80 times now, but if the casters go out I can replace them for far less money than it would take to buy a higher dollar stand. I can live with that.

Great. Have fun with your stand. I'm not talking down on them at all. It's entirely possible that your higher dollar stand is slightly easier to use than mine. It's entirely possible that your stand looks a lot nicer than mine. There are any number of reasons that you might want a more expensive stand than what I use. But don't suggest that I'm wrong when I say that a more expensive stand isn't needed to work on the bike. It simply isn't. The stand I use is a sturdy construction, it does what is needed, and can be used by a single person. Anything else is unnecessary.

Hey guys, are rear stands more or less universal? I'm looking to get a nice one but would want to keep it when I eventually change bikes.

More or less, yes. If you get a nicer one it should be one that works with spools, and I'm pretty sure pretty much any sport bike can have spools installed.

Helps that our bikes are probably one of the lightest sport bikes out there. I'd be more worried about using the venom stand on say a 1000rr.

Anyways, I just assembled mine the other day. Can't wait to use it for my second oil change. Wish they included the torque spec on the bolts though, would be nice to know whether or not I was overtightening it.

I recently watched the documentary "Closer To The Edge" covering one riders (Guy Martin) journey to Isle of Man TT race. You know what I noticed? About 30 HF rear stands in use by TT racers. If they are good enough for a TT racer, they are good enough for me. Just thought I would share that nugget. Oh, their pit stops are down to nearly 30 seconds while using such a cheap stand.
