1st Trackday
Finished 1st day at Gateway in St Louis. Wow.
I rode with novice of course. The 300 was a lot of fun. Had a few moments that were less than stellar. Over road the instinct to grab brake and chop throttle when I thought I couldn't make the corner. Just told myself more lean! 3rd session one of our group failed that and crashed pretty hard. That red flagged us. The really nice guy next to us in garage crashed at about 100 on the goat path. Bike is trashed. He was ok but wife took him to hospital for leg X-ray. I could keep up in the twisters but really fell behind on straights. I'm hooked. Sad to consider not taking the bike on road but definitely see advantage of race plastics. |

You can do both. Its a little bit of work but you can absolutely swap between race and stock plastics.

Wife was mentioning the track is about $300 a day. I reminded her that the airplane I rent is $300 for 2 hours and the one I want to buy is $100,000 with an operating cost of $75/hour.
She responded by sending me links to motorcycle trailers so we don't have to rent for trip to Heartland park in a couple weeks. |

She souns like a keeper!
Don’t get a motorcycle speciffic trailer. You’ll find a regular old 4x8 or larger flat bed. Or even better a 5x8 enclosed will make a better track trailer than a Kendon. |

I second basic trailer. Here's my HF special. Saved as much money as possible and spent it on 48 track-days last year. And tyres.. gas... food.. dog food.. etc...

And your wallet will never be the same....
I started riding on the track in 2014 and yeah, it's an addiction. Going to do probably 8 or 10 days this year. The first year and a half I did swap my fairings for race glass every time. That got really old and when I saw a good deal on a track bike I snapped it up. You can get a perfectly good track bike for $3k or so, already prepped... the trick is to recognize that you do NOT need the biggest, baddest, fanciest bike in the paddock because it's going to be a very long time before the bike limits you. The SV650 is a terrific choice, BTW, and very popular. A lot of people just tape their lights up and ride. That's certainly an option. I elected not to because my street bike is a near-mint 2011 GSX-R750. Replacement plastics are EXPENSIVE and I didn't want to risk 'em. If my street bike had already been down, I wouldn't have bothered with the race glass. My rig is about as low-budget as it gets. Harbor Freight trailer (now no longer offered new, but you can find 'em used), chock, ramp and a Honda Fit to tow it.

Track is both the best and the worst place at the same time. Best for the smile-factor ..... worst for the wallet lol. But if you were flying as a hobby I don't suppose this is going to be too bad for your wallet.

HF trailers will be back soon. They just had recall on sub-standard tyres. When those are replaced, we'll see them for sale again. Exact same trailer made by same outfit can also be had from Northern Tool or Tractor Supply.

Found a used trailer with Pitbull TRS for 750.
Put on some Diablo Corsa2's. The owner of the shop I got them mounted at is one of the control riders for St John's at heartland. He offered to spend some time with me. When he looked at my OEM IRC tires he said "Oh hell no you aren't taking those on the track" Of course he then commented it's cheaper to buy a track ready bike then to get my ninjette prepped. Then proceeded to show me his KTM 990 Supermoto-R that I should try at track day and purchase for $4500. I think that will kill me so will stick to 300. Got the pins for the trs. I notice you have to remove the castle nut safety pin so I got a cotter pin that's not the bend over the ends type. Got tools in one plastic bin. Gear in another. Repacked the trailer bearings. I think we're ready for Heartland tomorrow. |
