2001 Ninja 250 - Won't start

Sat all winter, just put new battery in and it won't start. Any suggestions on what it might be? It was runnig fine last year, I'm so sad.

Did you drain the gas out of the carburetors? Or put any stabil or seafoam in the gas? If not chances are you need to remove the carbs and clean them. And the gas in the tank is junk so you need to drain it and get some new stuff. 87 octane w/o ethanol is the best.

Thanks! Going to take it to the shop tomorrow so I can get it tuned up since I haven't done anything to it since I got it.

I second doing it yourself. It's not as bad as you might think. I've cleaned an extra pair of carbs just for fun once.

The stealership will charge you upwards of $150 to clean it out. I don't think it's worth even $50.

The only thing is it is raining, I don't have a garage and I don't have that much time and I am in need of a tune up anyway.

I really want to get to know my bike and be able to fix these things myself but at the same time I want to ride ASAP and think taking it to a shop would make me get on quicker.

I don't blame ya and can totally understand your position. I would just take it then if you don't mind the cost.

Can you hear the starting motor churn when you press the start button? If no, then dead battery or faulty wiring, if yes, then as many have already pointed it out to you, your carbs need cleaning.

Think it's the carbs, the battery is brand new fully charged. IT sounds like it wants to start, I feel so sad when she doesn't make it.

I'm rich so money is nothing I'm sooooooo joking right now.

I am more excited about getting on my bike and practicing A.S.A.P. so I am paying for the convenience and accept that I will be getting raped vs. being smart and doing it myself

my 01 ninja sat for 4 months with 6 month old gas (albeit with techron), accidentally left the petcock on, and not trickle charged or covered with a tarp and it started up like a champ.

i want to say dirty carbs its unlikely. i feel that the engine may not be getting fuel.

Thanks Paul. Only time will tell....and I am hoping that means I will know what's going, have it fixed, and riding be in the next few days.

The jets are definitely gummed up. Stabil or seafoam might have saved you. But if anyone you know has a clue with tools you could put some new tires on your bike with the money youd save. I hope you don't still have the stockers on.

Hi Kevin,

How long would this take (not trying at all to sound like an impatient bi-atch)? Isn't it good to get a tune up anyway? I am sure doing this myself is the best answer as all you experienced bikers have proven. I need to learn about my bike, I don't know what stockers are

My baby has been sitting since October, I have neglected her and probably deserve this.
Nothing new except for a battery 2 days ago.

A competent mechanic would have the carburetors cleaned in a few hours. Much of the work in this job is removing the fairings to get the carburetor out. If you want them to do a full tune up, valve job, sync and all, maybe a whole day plus whatever time they need to clean out the queue in front of you.

Stockers = stock tires in this context.

Stock tires are junk.... don't ride on em. I have more confidence in the knobbies on my dirt bike in sand. And if there from 2001 don't even get me started haha.....

Also do you have gear? I would recommend taking your bike to a wide open parking lot and practicing stopping and starting with the clutch. Also practice stopping with the front brake. Any serious racer or street rider alike use the front almost exclusively.
