Buying a 94 Ninja 250 Today

First bike. Never ridden before. Been wanting to get into riding for some time now, and now Im finally doing it.

Found a 94 Ninja 250 and Ive got a question about price/worth

its got 19k miles, has been layed down before, evident by the pegs and the rewelded bar. The plastics arent scrapped up, but the paint is bad. Mechanically and structurally otherwise it looks/sounds fine.

it has new tires, some recent maintenance, but needs mufflers and a windshield before ill drive it.

Guy is asking $950 for it. I feel thats high?

here's the ad
http://greenville.craigslist.org/mcy/1212084305.html

Im thinking of offering $700-$750. too low? I see much better looking ones with half the miles selling for $1200, and Ninja 500's selling for $1500-1800. I dont mind doing the work to it, I like that type of stuff, i just want to see what you guys thing about that price..

It varies greatly by region, I have learned. $950 for that in NJ would be too high. Out here in ND that would be about right, perhaps very slightly high.

If he is firm on the price, I'd throw out an extra $300 for the better bikes you have been seeing.

You can find a better deal.
If you have some xtra hundreds I would definitely look for something better.
That's a 94 with 19k miles.
I've seen 04 with way less mile for around 1500.
For an extra 500 you could have a bike that is 10 yrs newer with way less mile.
just something to think about.
Good luck.
What's your zip code?

IMO, I'd say it's just a little steep for the condition and mileage for the bike. Like Joe said, you could save the extra $$ that you'd be spending on fixing up the 94 and put it towards something that's actually ready to ride... Just my

Either way, good to have you aboard! Post pics or an update once you've got one!!

I dunno, Im kinda sick of looking honestly. Been going back and forth for probably 8 months?..

Im just ready to get one and be done with it. everything else i find sells within a day or 2, which is a real problem when you have to arrange for transportation/trailering.

if he bites at $700, ill probably do it. I can replace the parts and clean it up a little for that that much and not feel bad about it.

is 19k high mileage?

I don't think 19K is high for a 1994... I have an 06 and have over 10K on it. But that's me.

Have you taken the MSF course yet? If not, definitely a good idea to find the course being offered locally and take it before buying your bike. Also what about protective riding gear? As to the price for the '94 bike, I also think that sounds a little high. You could pay about the same or a little more for a bike that's not been wrecked.
Just my .02 though, Tony

Taking the course soon i think, but the only one available in my area is a Harely Rider's Edge course, so its very expensive, and not very good from people Ive spoken to about it.

I have full gear and intend to wear it at all times.

the EX250 is easy to work on and parts are easy to get.. as the model was made for about 20 years.. I bought my 99 with 4500 miles.. now its almost 4900.. lol

I picked up some parts I needed on ebay and its all good now... heck.. if he wants to move it quick.. $700 is fine..

save the money for parts..

Yea, ill DIY.

Idle is way off right now, seems to jump up and down a bit, wants to idle really high, and my dad said the clutch seems like its grabbing kinda high, maybe needs adjusting.

need to clean up some ghettoness from the previous owner as well. Hollowed out mufflers, ect.

Took it for the maiden ride. Drove around in circles for 20 minutes in the parking lot, my first time on a motorcycle!

congratulations Tommy Doesn't look all that bad!
If you're going to replace the mufflers, you should look at the area p thread for the pregens... and I second what tony said about the MSF!
Looks like you can take it at York Technical college...

not bad at all! It must be loud with the baffles out though.. I am in the process of putting chrome cans on mine... you can pick up scratched or dented cans pretty easy... Im lookin for one good left one now to complete mine...

Look for a nice used windscreen, but for what some people want for a used one.... I spent a few bucks more and bought a ZG double bubble..

best of luck with it!

I took my MFS class through the rider's edge. I think it was a great class. I learned a lot. As for the price I think you are paying for Harley-Davidson or HD(High Dollar). Also I got more time as the rider's edge was an 26 hour program and other programs were only 18 hours. The only thing I didn't like about the class was the motorcycle the Buell Blast. The bike I rode only had about 600 miles on it and it ran like crap compared to my ninja. Take the class you will learn something from it.

Congrats on getting your bike. $800, That's what I paid for my '89 back in 2006 with 8k miles, now it's got over 44k miles. Funny how the miles add up so quickly...

Anyhow, as you start working on the bike and learning more about it, don't forget about one of the older Ninja 250 sites as their FAQ is one of the best if not the best for the new rider and the Ninja 250. Since they've been around so long, a lot of questions have been asked and answered, so there's a lot of information just waited to be searched. Also since this bike has been built for so many years basically unchanged a lot of parts are available on eBay.
