Need a new lid
The race season is coming fast and my helmet is at the 5yr mark, so it will not pass race tech. I am currently racing/riding with a scorpion ex1000 and like it very much. The only issue is the vis while fully tucked. The brow seems to come down quite a bit. What helmets give good vis while in the tuck but still feel like a scorpion?
Open to other options as well but this will be a race helmet, so little to no street use stuff is a show stopper. My requirements; Must fit Must be able to see lol Must vent well Budget is sub $400 Thanks

the scorpions i've worn i would classify as feeling like wearing a pillow. the visibility is was about the same as my shoei which is also similar to that head-in-a-pillow feeling. the CL16 i had felt similar to the nexx... the nexx has tons and tons of view area. the cl16 was about average, similar to the scorpion. but they are more like you are wearing a bucket with pads on the inside. the other shittier helmets i've worn fell into those two vague categories but were generally shittier in every way. it seems like the more expensive the helmet is, the quieter it is. i personally like that head-in-a-pillow feeling some helmets have... i think its the type of multidensity foam they use

the cl16 was the only helmet i've used that i would say was 'good' at ventilation.

I typically wear my scorpion helmet on the streets but I may wear my hjc to the track as it's everything you need and it fits slightly snugger than my scorpion helmet with maintaining snell certification. The hjcs are similar enough to scorpions except with a little less comfort and the ventilation isn't as good in colder weather (not sure why)
they're dirt cheap too where I am, budget with real protection it's my ideal track helmet/passenger helmet (until I get a passenger who's riding more than once a month) |

What is your head shape? I love my Arai RX-Q for street riding, I think their hand sculpted shell shapes are the best in the business. I probably wouldn't wear it to the track due to the price.
Check out Scorpion, my dirtbike helmet is a Scorpion and I love it. It's DOT and ECE approved so I wear it on the street when I ride my enduro too. The air pump adjustment is great, and quality wise my Arai is only just a hair better. For me HJC, Icon, and Bell don't work. I don't know what it is but all of those helmets look huge on me.

Scorpion = street/track/race Arai Vector = my backup helmet, fits fine enough but has same issue as scorpion, but fits ok'ish HJC Star = way to heavy, way to loud, don't fit right but well under budget My goto lid is my scorpion ex1000. It's just as alex said, like a a pillow. I wouldn't even think twice about buying another if it were not for the view area while in a full tuck issue. Ya know, when the chin of the helmet hits the tank. I think it's a body size or flexibility issue. When I fully tuck, my view in the direct front is not really limited but the brow of the helmet comes down enough for me to notice when I should be focused on other things. Maybe if I had more neck flexibility. Try it, slide all the way back in the seat, lean forward and then touch the chin of your helmet to the tank and look forward. They are a great street/track helmet but when you get to a certain level, you notice the little things...

In that case I would look at helmets that the pros are wearing, maybe AGV, Shoei, shark or nexx. Still can't go wrong with Arai IMO.
The top level helmets from these brands should have more features that cater to serious racers. Lets face it, as good of a value as Scorpion helmets are you don't see any MotoGP guys wearing them.

the best lid is the one that fits properly, i really liked my Shark RSX, but they no longer make that helmet. Very light helmet, and the fit was perfect for my oval shaped skinny head/face..

I have been doing taekwondo for 10yrs. While I can hold my own at yoga, I am still put to flexibility shame by the yoga vets though.
I have been checking out the fine details of helmets, and some have a steeper angle cut. I can't explain it very well, Imma just have to show you. Check the angles in the attached pic. I "think" mostly the agv or shark (race-r) has what I am after. I haven't owned an agv or shark before, so I don't know if the fit will be right. The problem that I am having with the scorpion and Arai is the back of the helmet hits my jacket and the brow area sits right on my eyebrows someone pushing them down. I "think" the bell would give a similar feeling to what I have now. I will have to see what I like. I will also be trying nitek as well.

funny, at a glance (with the smaller image) my first thought was "man the top right one looks sick" click image to resize it and realize that my bias towards scorpion exists for a reason
the agv looks like it'll solve your visibility problems though |

If you measure it, the angle on the scorpion in the top right isn't that far off the agv/shark. Possibly it's a shell shape/fit thing.

Thanks gents, I will see if I can find a r2000 helmet and try it on. I can tell you for 100% fact, the nitek helmets are NOT it if you are having the same issues as I am. Vis is worse than scorpion in tuck and hang off. The would work awesome for street though. And they fit well within the budget.

Decided to ride a bit in full tuck helmet on tank to see if I could replicate your problem with my own scorpion exo1100. I see exactly what your problem is unfortunately, just not enough vision in that position.

Hmm, I stand corrected. Kinda hard to believe that some MotoGP racers are wearing a $400 helmet.

I would assume that it was designed around him though. If it was designed for a racing position then it may be worth a look since it's around the right price point. I would imagine that a helmet that bautista wears wouldn't have the same visibility problems as the more street oriented line that the 1000/1100/etc are
