Help needed, newbie. [Video Attached]
Hi everyone. I just got my motorcycle permit and am new to bikes. My friend had his old 07 Ninja 250 he doesn't ride anymore and gave it to me for free. The bike was sitting for about a year, and reading around, I did basic tasks such as:
Drained the gas tank and added new gas, Checked to see if the spark plugs gave a charge. (They did) Charged the battery. Checked oil. (Looks good) So, the bike turns on, but here is my issue: The bike will ONLY turn on with the choke. It will not idle without the choke, and will die when the choke is taken off. Also, whenever I give the bike any gas, the RPM shoots down, and will eventually die. I took out the carbs and saw that it was missing one idle mixture screw. I ordered a replacement and tried to put it in today to see if that was the issue. Still same problem. Here is a video of what is going on. I have taken out the carbs again and am just waiting to see what everyone suggests.. Thank you! Sorry for vertical recording. Wasn't thinking about it at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv4c...ature=youtu.be Last futzed with by DKoumane; September 20th, 2016 at 09:07 PM. Reason: Added youtube link for ease. |

At the very least, your idle appears to be set way too high. Mine idles nicely at 1500RPM, but I've seen some set theirs as low as 1100/1200. Yours seems to be at about 4000RPM?
Solution: Idle adjust (the little knob under the left side of the carbies) and adjusting the throttle cables |

Thank you for the advice! I tried that earlier as well.. The black knob.. It changed my idle RMP but still did not help with the main issue |

Then I'm at a loss. I was suffering the same problem unless I let the bike warm up a bit at idle, but it went away when I cleaned the carbs (but other problems showed themselves instead)

If it won't run without using the choke, then the carburetors need to be serviced, I suggest PM @ducatiman for all your carburetor needs, I strongly suggest you let me service them, it's money well spent, and time and aggravation saved.

Currently I'm taking apart all the jets and cleaning them through.. I hope I'm on the right path. I was trying to shortcut and save money before getting an actual service. |

Idle should not be set with the choke on FYI.
It's pretty clear to me that a year of sitting has allowed the fuel to gunk up and a thorough cleaning is in order (not just the jets). There are passages in there that could be blocked. If it runs with the choke on, that means not enough fuel is getting into the carb to run with it off -- the mixture is too lean. But there is some fuel getting through, so it runs okay when you richen the mixture by applying the choke. Therefore a blocked jet or passage somewhere. If it were me, I'd remove the carbs, disassemble them, and do a thorough cleaning/soaking. This cutaway is not actually of a Ninjette carb, but it is close. This should give you an idea of where blockage might be happening.

Bike sitting for a year...clogged pilot passages correctly diagnosed, a full service is called for....as fouled fuel will not restrict itself to *just* the pilot jets. If you concentrate on jets alone, its likely the classic "redo" will be in your future...though you may get lucky. But once idling is corrected other running issues may become evident (through other circuits, adjustments and calibrations). Try it and see for certain.

Hey everyone thanks for the replies. Last night I took apart all the pilots and cleaned them. They were clogged to the point where I couldn't see through them. I just got out of class right now and I'm going to put the carbs back in and see what happens. Will update when done.

Just curious... there are only two pilot jets, one per carb. Do you mean you cleaned all the jets, etc.?

Make sure you read through most of this section before you install the carbs - http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_...n_the_carbs%3F.
There are a few details that are easy to miss unless you are familiar with these carbs. |

Hello all! Good news. After cleaning all the jets the bike now runs! I did have to directly pour gas into the tube leading to the carbs.. But I assume that is because I drained all the gas when cleaning the carbs out.
Just took the bike for a test run around the neighborhood and everything checks out. Now I'm at the DMV getting tags. Thank you all for the help! |

You could probably also have sucked on the petcock vacuum line to prime the carbs.
