popping noise

My bike makes a single pop when it starts cranking usually after its been sitting a while. I'm curious is that because of valves or what

It couldn't hurt to do a valve adjustment, when was the last time? Carb cleaning? Are there any mods on your bike?

My bike backfires too from time to time. Totally random, at different states of modifications, different temps, different waiting periods.

Bike is stock except for k&n filter and I haven't cleaned the carbs and I'm at 14k so I'm going to get it checked out

No valve inspection/adjustment at that mileage? Definitely get that checked out.

Try a simple fix first;

Do you use the choke when cold starting? No? Try it next time. You might want to consider shimming your needles.

Ok cool, let's at least start by which area this pop comes from. Exhaust or carb? Does it pop from the tailpipe or does the sound come from under the seat/somewhere in the middle of the bike?

Popping from the exhaust is unburned gas igniting in the pipe. Might sound cool- but it's indicative of a bad air fuel mix.

If it only happens at start up after sitting for a while my guess is that the carb bowls are filling up too much and fuel vapor is getting in to the cylinder and messes with the ratio only at start up.

Clean or replace the needle valves in the carbs if the float level is within spec.

If it only happens once in a while (after sitting for weeks) at start-up and it's not an ear-shattering "kaboom", why even worry about it?
