Idle/Start issues with 2005 Ninja 250
I just picked up a used 2005 Ninja 250 a week ago and now having some starting issues with it. It has 5800 miles on it and other from a few scratches here and there it seems to be in good shape. To get it started I often have to turn the idle up a bit and after 30 seconds to a minute it will get warmed up and I can turn the idle back down and all is right with the world. If I give it any throttle or choke before it will die. If I give it little throttle after maybe 30 seconds it will bog down a bit but usually keep going. The previous owner said he just had the carbs cleaned recently so what else could it be?

Welcome Bob, seems like cleaning the cabs (idle jets) is in order, take the prev owner at face value? Maybe, maybe not.

Well it does sound Carb related to me. High float level maybe. Something causing it to drip fuel while its just sitting overnight and flooding it. If you cant choke it until it clears out, it needs the extra air to lean out the mixture. Thats what it sounds like to me anyway. Did the previous owner clean the carbs himself or did he have a repair facility do it?

Howdy, he said a buddy cleaned them that works on bikes and has shop but who knows. I put some seafoam in the gas tank to see if that would help a bit. I know it will probably need a valve check/adjustment coming up here soon but I'd like to ride it a little bit before spending more money on it.

Well, I can definitely understand wanting some ride time before having to put some more dollars in it. Going through some issues with mine as well and can relate. Not likely its a valve gap issue. Especially if it runs fine after its been running for a minute or two. Still think its a fuel thing. Out of curiosity, have you tried starting it with the throttle held open half way or so instead of adjusting the idle screw? Just until it starts then let off. I know theres a recall for fuel tanks leaking, but I think thats externally and doesnt affect starting or idle. When riding, do you notice any surging, stumbling or mis-firing?

This an easy fix or a tough one? I haven't done much maintenance on bikes so I may just take it to the local shop up the street. Would they fix the jets if I just got routine carb clean and sync? Update: My buddy has offered to help me clean the carbs so I will give that a go and report back. Thank you for the suggestions. Last futzed with by agentbad; May 1st, 2013 at 01:24 PM. |

I'm sure it's carb related but it wouldn't hurt to check your vacuum line and fuel line before taking the carbs off. Cracked or loose vacuum line can give a nasty running condition on these little carbs. With the tank off and a few extra bucks you should throw in some NGK spark plugs.

I actually just ordered some NGK spark plugs but now the bike won't even start. It will idle really rough and high for a second go down to about 500-1000rpm's and then sputter out. I ran some seafoam through it but I think it just lossened up more gung and clogged it worse. It has a fresh battery but I am going to try to jump it just to see what happens. Also noticed a bit of gas from messing with the idle knob too much.

Personally, I would pull the carbs and clean them yourself. I seldom trust other folks when it comes to my toys unless I truly know their work skills. Like the previous people mentioned, it's carb related and sounds like the jets are still clogged. Some people think spraying carb cleaner on the carbs is cleaning it which isn't. You'll have to remove the jets, and clean the tiny orifices with some copper wire to scrape off all the crud.
There are many tutorials here that will go over the cleaning process and carb removal.

I think I am going to give this go with help from a buddy. Can I use a E string from a guitar in place of the copper wire for the jets? I think I will start with the pine sol soak and work from there.

Scraping stuff inside jets makes me nervous. soak them in cleaner and use compressed to blast everything out if possible.
