removing the ignition

So I lost my keys and was told that I would need to remove my ignition switch and take it to a locksmith to have them make me a new key. I have searched on Google and cannot find anything on how to remove it. I have found a few posts saying you need to drill some rivets out. others say that if you take out a few bolts it ill slide right out? has anyone actually done this before? also if I do have to drill some things what will I have to replace to put the ignition back in? I don't want to buy s new ignition because then the keys would not match the gas tank and the backseat.

I sure have. Here's a DIY posted by member CThunder_Blue. He's awesome!

It's basically the same except you're installing your ignition back in to your own triple. You have to drill out the black bolt cover rivet whateverthe****s. Do it nice and slowly.

...oh boy. Time to look in to having a blank made or finding a way to order a key from kawasaki because you don't want to have to break your steering lock...

i can't imagine that the new-gen is that different from the preen with the triples and stuff. in which case, i think you would have to prop the front end up, remove the forks, then take out the lower tree in order to slide the upper tree out and left so you do not damage the steering lock. gauges might have to be removed as well but not sure.

I bought my ninja '00 without keys.

pull off the top clamp, and the whole ignition switch comes off with it. then you can drill out the security bolts and put a new switch on.

if yours is anything like mine, the code will actually be on the helmet lock

I don't want to have to replace the switch tho I just want to remove it to bring to a locksmith and put that same one back into the bike.

you have to drill the bolts to remove the ignition and therefore take it to a lock smith and have him key it. See if you can remove the upper triple/ignition while the steering is locked.

Seems to me the easiest way would be to get the key code and take that to a locksmith to get a new key made. Call around to find a locksmith that has the ride cut codes for that year. The key code is stamped on the ignition lock cylinder and should be on the seat lock.

If the code can't be located, removing the triple upper and taking it to a locksmith is also a good option, that way there's no risk of damage from trying to drill it loose.
