Inside a Racer's Helmet

Hello corner, my old friend
I've come to ride with you again
Because a knee softly dragging
Left it’s scrapes while I was sleeping
And the racer that was planted in my lane
Still remains within the sound of silence

In empty garages I walked alone
Small town streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of my work lamp
I turned my face to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed
By the flash of a better ride
That split the line
And touched the sound of silence

And around the apex I saw
Ten thousand fans, maybe more
People racing without riding
People riding without feeling
People cheering along
That ears will never share
And no one dares
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "you do not know
Traction like a cancer grows
Hear my rpms that I might teach you
Take my bars that I might steer you"
But my tires the pressures swell
And echoed in the sound of silence

And the riders bowed and prayed
To the grip of god they made
And the rear washed out without warning
And the sliding that it was forming

And the cup said
"The words of the winners
Are written on the podium walls
And forum halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence

This version of the song pretty much kicks arse too.

I was sitting here working on bike related stuff when the song came on. It made me stop and really think about how much I really DIDN'T hear while racing. On the flip side, the people watching can't hear you yell curse inside your helmet either. lol Thank goodness

You can't fool me. I know that this is what's really in there.

Initially I Googled "worms in my head" but the images are WAY too disturbing....

Race orgs do not allow things like that attached to your helmet. At least, none of the orgs I'm aware of.

Track day, yes. Racing, that's a no no.

Nice! I have a Sena I use to talk with the wife and also my sister and brother in law when we ride.

I do agree though, sometimes I get pretty raucous in my helmet while I race.

had a 2 way radio set up for a endurance deal once it was funny to hear them say well that looked nasty after it happened I do Iracing and my friend and me talk all the time while racing so having others key the mike while riding does not bother me others could not do it. One rider found it fun to just talk a whole lap telling us what he was doing....and was crazy fast.

efff that noise... I enjoy the tranquility of the silence with a bit of wind noise that I still can't get rid of.

The sound of a fine tuned engine near the rev limit is like a soft pillow to me. I tune bikes for a living call me nuts... I love the sounds of the bike and wind noise. One of my fav vids was one of the Isle of man bike onboard it was early stuff and it had a poor mike but you would see him exit the curve and then see sky shift track sky and as the speed came up the wind noise just became to much for the mic I guess as the sound just faded out

Definitely one of the many things that makes riding the best
Great song rewrite, I listened along with it and realized as well how little I hear while riding/racing. Made me think back to the times last season when friends, family, and teammates were cheering me on and though I could see their energy from the sidelines I could not hear them.
