Planning a one-man overnighter - is there an app for that?

I'm looking for an Android app that can track my ride, & automatically upload my position so wife doesn't think I died. Any recommendations?

I haven't used either, especially because I'm a Droid user, but:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gps-...453761271?mt=8

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gps-...466429552?mt=8

All I did was google search "How to view another phone's gps position"

There's an app out but I can't remember the name. It basically sends out automated texts to a set list of contacts if it doesn't see movement via GPS tracking.

I've used Real Time GPS on my android and it worked great, though it does require a cell connection to broadcast the position to the website. But it will hold the data until it reconnects, then transmits all the saved points.

I've also just recently downloaded the Road ID app that has a tracker on it, but its still in beta so haven't used it yet.

Bubbler GPS is another one that tracks you and connects to Spotwalla so you have more control over who sees what.

Personally, I use my Spot tracker most of the time. Nice having something that not only lets others follow me, but can call for help if needed.

That suggestion is for when I ask for a hotel referral with free WiFi.

Cerberus is an anti-theft app that can track your phone online.

Otherwise you can use Tasker to make your own. When I rode cross-country with Tasker I just had to click on my custom widget and it would update my location and text it to my family when I reached my stop for the night. With Tasker you can define it however you want (e.g. time based, location based, respond to a pre-defined text with location).

That's a pretty cool idea for an app.

I think the Wolf has you on the right track. Are you running the phone off bike power? Running GPS and needing connectivity the whole time will drain the battery faster than one might think.

I haven't used it myself, but Waze supposedly has an option to send your route to someone, and they can follow your progress on Google Maps (they don't need to have Waze). Waze has other nice GPS features too.

Just saw an interesting article about Waze that claims police are logging in and deleting speed-trap warnings on Waze.... those bastards.

I stumbled across another app that does this. Glympse

Quote:
Glympse is the easiest way to safely share your location with someone in real time. No sign-up needed and no new social network to manage. Recipients receive a link allowing them to view your ETA and location in real-time for the length of time you choose.

When the timer on your Glympse expires, your location is no longer visible. Best of all, recipients do not need any special software to view a Glympse. Send a Glympse via SMS, email, Facebook or Twitter and recipients can view it using any web-enabled device.
I haven't used it myself, but it seems perfect for this sort of thing. It's available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. I found it from an article saying that it would be available for the new version of GM's MyLink radios.

I've always wondered about them doing something like that. At least with Waze, they (well, the phone's GPS coordinates as given to Waze) have to be near the reported item to act on it. It's not like the chief can log in from the PD and just wipe out all the reports in the county.

Just shoot a text at gas stops, I'm assuming you're on a ninja, so, you'll probably be on paved roads in somewhat populated areas.

I send an all good message at the end of the day, usually don't touch phone unless I'm taking a picture.
