Corner Working
I have the opportunity to be a corner worker at willow springs. What this means is that I volunteer to corner work and get to ride the track for free, 40 mins as corner worker, 20 mins riding each hour.
What do you guys think, is this worth doing? The only requirement I really didn't like was that your tires need to be at 80% at the start of the day. Track would be willow springs and the corner work would be for California Superbike School. Think they will laugh at my 250?

I love corner working when the weather is nice and favorable. Get to see the riders up close screwing up or just plain out hauling ass! No one laughs when people go out and ride since everyone is out to have fun.

Nearly all track day orgs have this requirement. It's nothing new but how it is truly enforced may be more strict for CSS.

They approved my tires at buttonwillow and I'd guess they are around 50% so idk. Not sure if they are more strict or not on this rule

Its worth it. You would be rotating corners also. It's a good way to watch how good riders are taking certain corners that you can try. And its free track time

80% is just a number they throw out there so it's on the books. As long as your tire doesn't look toasted like mine you should be OK. If its big willow I'd pass because the course just to open, you'll "Literally" have the throttle pinned the whole time and maybe use the brakes lightly in turn 3 but that's it.
If its at the streets of willow then go for it |

I corner worked and really didn't care for it. Being out there in the summer sucked--suffered a minor heat stroke. But watching the AMA guys do their flying laps was a cool experience.
Corner working is not all fun games. It's serious bizz because you are responsible for those. I've seen corner workers miss crashes, not do their jobs, etc. and I would not hesitate for a moment to speak up if a corner worker wasn't doing their job. There weren't one moment when I just sat back and watched during open session. It was constantly moving your head left, right, left, right, left, right. Aaaahhh, I'm tired just from thinking about it. LOL With that said, it's a great way to get free track time. I think every track rider should at least do corner working once just to get an idea what it's like.

Their job includes relaying information about possible track issues, safety concerns and flagging the session. It's not uncommon for a corner worker to help load a crashed bike on the crash truck or help a rider over the wall. Corner workers are your friends and it pays to know where they are. lol Trailerboy531

When I took CSS, it seemed like the corner workers got like 15 minutes of riding time. On the flip side, it was only just the corner workers during that 15 minutes, so lots of open space.

I've never corner worked but I have been on the track enough to understand the importance of the position. Don't do it unless you are going to be very serious about it. Riders lives are on the line.
Make sure you know what to do in any and every situation. Not only watch the bikes go by but make sure everything is safe on their bikes and on the track. Know what flag and how to show it. Know what to do if someone goes down. You could be saving someone's life or causing more harm. Make sure you know how to keep yourself safe. I might hurt getting hit by a 100+MPH missle weighing 400lbs. Your concentration has to be as precise as the riders you are watching.

One of the guys I know corner worked and got smacked by the incoming bike while helping the other guy who crashed. Ended up in a coma for 2 years.
All the crap happened because "workers" on the corners before him did not flag when he radioed a crash. People were coming full speed, not knowing something is wrong. Poor fellow won't get his 2 years back, but it gives some picture of how serious the stuff can get. I hate that kind of a job - uneventful almost entire time, but you need to be on full alert constantly to make sure something like that does not happen. And that's hard. Really hard. I'd say go watch the bikes when you want to, and pay for your trackday when you want to ride. After all the track fee itself is not such a big expense. |
