Downed...

Welp... it actually happened. Despite my believing I wouldn't let it happen to me. Pulling into my garage.... have this weird finish on it that makes it really slippery... I think I was coming in a little too fast... braked.. it slipped... and down I went.

Only cosmetic damage on the right side. Left rearset snapped (somehow.. might be my left shin because that's the only thing that hurts on me.) (On second look it seems like it went left first, hit the ground, broke, I tried to save it and it went right and thats when it hit the ground and sustained the cosmetic damage)

I'm thinking I went up for the front brake and instead of rolling it forward I got flustered and gave it some gas.. Worst part is that I had it parked 3 minutes before but took it back out to put back in.

Any ideas on how much it costs to replace the rearset? Is it cheaper to take it to a welder to have them fix it? Would that maintain it's structural integrity? Would I be better off looking at aftermarket rearsets?

Thanks for the help guys and gals...

Not sure if the 2013 and 2012 parts are the same, but here's the info for the 2012 part from Bike Bandit...

35063:*STAY,STEP HOLDER,FR,L $72.37

a reweld if done right is probably stronger than the original.

i would probably get one off ebay though, since they are not much money.

Sorry to hear of this happening to you

Slick flooring indeed - I can see the partial reflection of the other stuff and your bike on it.

It's odd to see that clean snap of the rearset, hope your shin didn't do that. The OEM part would probably be 35063-08 - STAY,STEP HOLDER,FR,LH for the 300s, same tag but different part #. MSRP of around $80. From the diagrams, seems like an easy fix once you have the part. Online, I bought a seat cowl from GearHead, good vendor and holiday promo at the time. Your local dealer is a source for parts as well. Got a service manual?

Sorry that all that happened to your bike, Chris.

Yes, a good TIG welder can fix it (may be ~$30~40 ).

Yes, it can keep the structural integrity.

Careful finishing (with a file) and matching repainting will be needed.

Thank you. I'm thinking taking it to a welder will probably be my best bet... Next to that would be finding a used stock rearset from someone who upgraded to an aftermarket set. And third, buying an aftermarket one myself.

I'd be less concerned about the weld than the integrity of the lower bolt hole. From the licit doesn't look like there is a lot of material left.

On a "good"? note, you're the first person on this site to crash a 300! And probably at least in the first 1000 in the world? If not lower! So that's kinda good? Right?...

haha But seriously, sorry to hear and see this mate! Be careful next time on those damn slippery floors! I've lost my bicycle enough on them growing up to know it doesn't take much!

^ tough break. Feel bad for your bike, so new, so clean, poor thing.

I think it is common for people to let their "guard" down when they get super close to home, or in their parking lot....garage ect...

I almost went down in my parking lot. Was doing a sharp low speed turn to situate my bike to park it in the corner like i do all the time and i must have ran over the one leaf in the entire lot and my front gave just a bit, but i saved it.

Live and learn, i have quite cautious of these sneaky leaves now.

looks like an easy fix, just get some glossy touch up paint from an auto parts store.

the muffler cover is harder to fix though, you might have to run fine grit sandpaper over the whole thing, then buff.

It happened and sucked but that one thing you'll never do again. Shouldn't cost much to fix.

I'm not sure how you can know that a surface is slippy and still crash. There's no shame in being extra cautious. Maybe it's a male ego thing? Gotta gun it everywhere even when you're new!

If you have to; get your feet down either side of the bike and walk it in at slow speed keeping the revs at around 4k and using the clutch to slowly and gently move your bike forward. It looks stupid, but it looks a hell of a lot less stupid than smashing up a beautiful ninjette while parking it in your own garage.

I've parked my bike on ice, oil, moss, grime and gravel (not all at once!) without dropping it. If I know the surface is slippy I just take it easy. The more I ride the more I get a feeling of riding physics and the more I can add more speed and come closer to the limits of traction.

There's no shame in being a noob and applying extra caution.

You don't seem to know what you actually did. That suggests to me that you don't know what you should have done. Have you done a motorcycle course of some sort? MSF? If not, you'd probably really benefit from it.

There's lots of great videos on youtube explaining how to park a bike. How to do slow speed maneuvering. How to use your brakes in different situations.

I feel for you. Must be horrible to have scratched up a new ninja 300. They're so pretty... almost as pretty as a ninja 250

Didn't really consider it being that big of a threat to a heavy motorcycle. Once again, I had usually been taking it slow but was in a rush this time, a decision that I ultimately paid for.

I have taken the MSF course. I was out and about practicing my low speed maneuvering in a parking lot earlier that day. I got my confidence up, got in a hurry, and made a mistake.

Oh, great you took the MSF.

I've learned from my mistakes too! Half-dropped my bike once because I really wasn't concentrating and I hit the gear shifter instead of the rear brake. It lurched forward and then tipped over. I managed to slowly set it on the ground. I also took a corner too wide once and ended up in a ditch. <-- noobie!!

I'm pretty sure I've avoided 100s of other accidents though by reading this crash thread and learning from other peoples mistakes so I don't have to make them. I like reading up on how to effectively control bikes too, so I always know exactly how to control my bike in any situation. I even practice these things in my mind without even being on the bike. I'm sure it helps. Humans have an amazing ability to simulate things in their mind.

Some rubbing compound alone could probably make it almost disappear.

Yup. I say: Sand the cover and then spray it hi-temp black.

I think the footrest stay will swap with newgen or pregen ones, but they won't match the styling.
