Shifting Issues.

Hello, I'm trying to fix a Ninja 250r that has been parked up for awhile due to a shifting issue. I have it running but it just won't shift out of neutral. The story i got from the owner was "I was riding it and shifted into the neutral and it just wouldn't go into gear". I was wondering if any of you guys/gals could help me out with trying to diagnose the problem.

Are you riding the bike at the time, or is it stopped? The kawi neutral-finder feature prevents the bike from shifting up into second unless the bike is moving over a certain speed, keeping it in neutral. Will it not shift into first from neutral either?

Step one, put it on a stand and try to run through the gears with the engine off, turning the rear wheel by hand as needed.

Let us know!

I just tried that and nothing. I starting to think something inside the transmission is broke/bent.

The next simple thing would be the clutch lever and cable. All seem to be working right and adjusted within a workable range?

I am able to pull the clutch fairly easily, and it appears to be working correctly.

When you kick it down to go into first is it a smooth slide or does it click, Or does it not even make the full range of motion to go down? Try loosening the clamp that holds the linkage on the spline and setting it to a position or even flipping it to make first an up kick instead of down.

I finally got some time today to check it out. I drained the oil and took the clutch basket off and found the spring that holds tension on the clutch levers was missing after i looked around a bit i found a small spring that i put on for a temp fix and i can get into first with no issues. So hopefully in a week or so ill have it on the road again.
