2007 250 GPZ almost impossible to start when cold

Hello, my 250 is almost impossible to start when cold, though when you get it started it runs fine and will start fine when hot. Any ideas on what to check/fix?

This might sound familiar -

That would suggest it's not getting the additional fuel it needs from the enrichening circuit ("choke") when it's cold.

Make sure the "choke" cable and mechanism move at the carb when you move the lever on the bar.

What temps are you starting in? How fresh is the gas?

provided linkage is operational...it is not unheard of for the "choke pickups" or starter jets (whatever you want to call them) to clog, just as pilot jets do.

Let me find a pic....but confirming a guitar string of about .016" should penetrate about 1.5 inches. If it goes in just a bit and stops....its clogged, ram it through. Spray some carb cleaner before/during/after.

REMOVE the diaphragms! Permanent damage (swelling or distortion) can occur from rubber exposure to the nasty cleaner.

Red circle shows the pick up/starter jet, obviously do both sides. Its actually a long tube and the circuit makes a turn.

PS clearing this (and confirmation) is standard procedure within carb service.

Thank you for the replies. Previous to this issue the bike had sat for a long time and we drained and cleaned the tank and took the carbs off as the jets were block. I can't remember if I cleaned out the choke pickups or not. The diaphragms looked fine.
I will take the carbs off again and check the choke pickups.
