Thumbs up Hello from Blacksburg

A very hearty hello to all from southwest Virginia!

I'm sure some of you have seen my newbie posts at various places the last few days.

Wish I would've done a little more looking online and found this site when I bought my blue '08 'jette last year. Still, very happy with the purchase even though I did something very stupid immediately thereafter. Glad to be a part of the family and absolutely loving all the DIY posts and in general how friendly ya'll are.

Also would love to get together with anyone in the area for rides, a bike-washin or a brew; just shoot me a PM!

Welcome to the wild bunch, there is a lot of good info on here, so if you ever have any questions just ask. Also, this is great place to TALK, someone will always answer your message, esp when you really need to TALK ABOUT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU AND YOUR NEW BIKE.

Talking

Haha thanks for the encouragement. The 'very stupid' is something many of us have done. I dropped my baby. I just did it before I'd gotten to know her even a little bit. As in, I didn't even make it out of the parking lot of the previous owner.

Taking the MSF course, I learned a lot, but I left with one vice I know about. When turning (especially to the left) I'd roll on a little.

Leaving the apartment complex where I picked up the bike, I stopped at a stopsign like a good law-abiding citizen and new motorcycle owner. I just chilled there a few moments to get a little more familiar. But apparently I chilled too long for the car that'd pulled up behind me (didn't hear it thru helmet and plugs). She honked, I hurried up and got going. Dropped her into first, headed left, slowly released the clutch, making sure I turned hard enough to avoid the median on the other side. The median with the yellow painted curb.
Of course, watching the median curb wasn't the correct choice. That combined with my tendency to roll-on with left turns took me over the curb and into the grass and mulch. I tried to keep her up, but slipped on the mulch; we went down together. I had a meeting that night with some friends, they said I looked like someone had drowned my cat. I can honestly say I think I felt about that bad (but the kitty's still A-ok, sitting on the desk right now).

I had my gloves, jacket and helmet on with some heavy canvas pants and old combat boots. No real damage to me but a lot of bruised pride, which was made worse by the 5 people that saw me do it and having to pick up the pieces of my fairing while they watched.
Final damage: holes punched in right and front fairings, front fairing stay bent, right mirror & mount arm broken, right turn signal scuffed but just popped off, turf rash on the exhaust, brake grip & bar end.

Off to a bumpy start, but still a proud owner and undeterred. Got my first fall out of the way.

And go Hokies
