Web design geeks
So I picked up a book on HTML & CSS. Essentially I volunteered to help tackle my church's new website, and updating the site. I will also be working on podcasts/YouTube videos of the services.
Anyway, the site (of course) is in XHTML format and utilizes JS. Any recommendations on sites to get acquainted with JS? I did find this: http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp Are there any quality books? Just curious. The guy I'll be working with is a seasoned designer, but I don't want to lag too far behind. I did dabble in old HTML and Qbasic (LOL). I'm rusty, but I know a lot of the basic stuff. Any ideas?

http://jquery.com/
I used to do webdesign we i was a young lad, but got out of it, so don't know how much has changed, but back then i used jquery alot for java. But nowadays with html 5, don't know how relevant its is to use it, since it slows down mobile devices so much. |

I second jquery.
Been doing website work for the past 20yrs and jquery is my tool of choice for most js work (non-mobile). And honestly, it's somewhat rare that anyone writes raw js only unless it's for simple things, otherwise a js framework is used. There are TONS of jquery examples online and plenty of youtube vids. There is so much avail online, I haven't bought a tech book in about 10yrs. lol Chances are, no matter what tech you select, I will know it. If you get stock on something, post up and we will help you through it.

The site for the church has been designed. It may just need to be tweaked in the future. It is supposed to be easy to edit as well. I just know I will have to add a few things here and there. I have done some simplistic design in the past, one being for my in-laws lube shop. I got that up and running in 1 day. It was quick, but it works. Plus, they like it. haha

When I had to cook up some JS scripts for an SNMP monitoring system, I used that w3 site a lot. I often find that if I need to do something specific in JS, I just do a Google search on what it is I'm trying to do, and maybe put "javascript example" in the search, like:
get date in yyyymmdd format javascript example or something like that. That way, you can see how a bunch of different sites explain the same concepts. Hope that helps! |
