Unhappy Saw a bad wreck today on evening ride

Be careful out there guys. I was on an evening ride and heading home. Came to an intersection two cops a firetruck and ambulance. First thing I saw was a red sportbike in the road all torn up. Then a car in parking lot with their left rear door crushed in some. I didn't see the rider but there was an ambulance with lights on so he probably was in there already. I sure hope he survived that. Sad and scarey. Be careful out there every time you get on the bike. .

It's always a little unsettling to see stuff like that... hope everyone was okay. Just another reason to slow down a bit...

Those intersections are scary. Every time I get to one I slow down, even if I have the right of way.

That reminds us to take it easy on the streets, watch out for reckless drivers, and leave the fun at the track.

Accident

I saw an accident today on the way back from riding dirtbikes. The man had a skullcap on with no other gear. I'm not sure he made it.

What upsets me is that it was an accident that he could have walked away from had he been wearing gear.

He was riding a cruiser, wasn't he? I've yet to see an illegal helmet on anything but a cruiser rider. Helmets are mandatory in Louisiana, but some folks insist on using less than the bare minimum. And if you think lack of foresight is limited to cruiser riders, the local sport bike riders all wear full face helmets, but many wear nothing more in the way of protective gear.

People make choices and have to live (or die) with the consequences of their decisions. You can't convince some folks that some of the choices they make are foolish at best, and possibly lethal.

Are there a lot of motorcycle accidents in your area during the summer?

This riding season has been especially bad for us up here in Northern NJ. It seems like there's a death once a week for the past few weeks

This was the latest accident. Female driver texting while driving. Wasn't paying attention. Had to stop short. Started a chain of events that led to the death of a rider.

Unfortunately, lately I've been seeing about one news report per week of a major crash. This is in Victoria BC; there are maybe 350,000 people in the local area.

Although we have the mildest winter weather in Canada (very rare to drop below freezing) most riders park their motorcycles from say Halloween until March. They get on their bikes and start riding in the spring without any saddle time for six months, and they're rusty.

Despite the fact that we have very good training programs offered by the Safety Council and by a couple of private trainers, the majority of riders here have never had any formal training. The lack of both training and experience don't make for a good combination.

I'm from Northern/Central California. The worse I've heard of is Alan Porter. Many of you may remember the threads on here regarding him. He went for a ride, and disappeared. He was found deceased a month later. He was riding solo in a remote and very rugged part of the Sierras, and had gone off the road. He may have stilll been missing if gold prospectors hadn't found him. Learn from this incedent, please. Always tell someone where you are going. If you can afford it, buy a SPOT device. Even if you can't activate it to summon emergency help, it will at least track where you've travelled. Be safe friends.

^ I remember the story of alan porter. It made me want a gps tracking device but then I realized that my phone acts as one.

to answer the OP's question though, there are too many. I typically see 4 kinds of moto accidents on a semi-regular basis.

1.beginner who has no idea wtf they're doing fails to negotiate a turn, typically because they don't have faith in the bike's steering/don't roll on the throttle/hit the brakes/etc
2.riding drunk (usually an older cruiser rider but not always)...wtf people, seriously it's not worth it
3.street racer/canyon carver, someone flying down a back road out for a thrill and come across something (animal/debris in the roadway) that makes them run out of grip or they just run out of grip and go off. This is different from #1 because #1 generally doesn't have the technical skill or experience to necessarily be riding at a fast pace. This grouping is typically more experienced riders.
4.hit by car, this is the worst. The majority of deaths are from being hit by cars, my general manager a few years back was rear ended by an old lady in a truck as traffic slowed on the highway and spent a good deal of time in the icu burn unit as a result. It is very rare for people to get hit by cars and walk away without a laundry list of injuries even with proper protective equipment.

In PA you don't need to wear a helmet, and almost no one on a cruiser wears one. I've seen a couple of crashes (ironically saw one of the worst on the way to my MSF class in the spring). I always wonder how there can be so many suicidal people out there. Wind feels great in your hair I'm sure, but the kids will miss you...

Indeed it was a cruiser. Harley in fact. All of his buddies were standing around like "omg what just happened? Bikes are invincible!"

I don get it myself. I jump between NJ and PA all the time for work in Fairless Hills and to just ride up the river.

I see people with nothing on and it still baffles me.

I actually saw a guy once coming over the bride into PA on a cruiser. as he waited at the light he removed his helmet and and put in his bags.

Then more recently a guy (NJ plates) going into NJ struggling to get his helmet OUT of his bag to put it on... The best part of that one was he had just pulled out of a restaurant and only had a block or 2 to go befor entering NJ...

And yes, both riders had been on cruisers...

I don't understand people not wearing gear at all. Not necessarily even for crash protection. Have you ever been hit by a bug or rock at 50+ mph? It hurts! I can't imagine being whacked straight up in the face by a (_______) at that speed. It'd seriously knock someone around or at least distract them to the point of dangerous riding.

Iowa does not have a helmet law. The sheer volume of squids in this state is appalling to say the least. We end up with 1-2 fatalities a week during the summer months. They made the choice to ride stupid (no gear); I make the choice to no longer care. If I let every one of those accidents affect me, I'd never get back on my bike.

There are also those incidents where sharp debri gets kicked up from the road. A friend of mine at work is a long time Harley rider (and unfortunately he doesn't regularly wear a helmet and has quite the "lead hand"). At any rate, one day he was flying into work on his Harley on the turnpike. Some metal bar was kicked up from the road and smashed into his bike fairing, causing it to crack. Luckily he was able to maintain control and pulled over to make sure everything was in working order. He said if the bar had been just a few inches higher, it would have hit his arm and likely broken it. The bar was probably 8 inches or so long with a sharp edge. I'm not sure which Harley he has, but it was a newer one with those full fairings.

A little while ago they closed the freeway all might because a ninja 250 had crashed on its own. The rider slid into the guardrail and severed his leg. He was airlifted to a hospital an hour away by car.

Unfortunately if I have no cellular signal or the battery is dead it won't act like one. It has a tracer in it in the case that it is lost or stolen (as a feature) and I'm not the only one who has the ability to use said tracer. I typically head out with a fully charged battery though when I go out on pleasure rides

I know there are some beacons. I looked at a few a while back for hiking. I remember them being prohibitively expensive. Which is sad because it could possibly save a life.

Last big one I heard of was this
Quote:
Two 19-year-old men riding a 125cc Trial bike have sustained injuries, one life threatening, as they were thrown from the bike on Buchanan Road in the Parson Cross area of Sheffield.

At around 12.30am this morning, (Friday, 11 July), between the junctions with Collinson Road and Adlington Road, it is believed the rider lost control of the bike as he was travelling towards an oncoming marked police car.

No collision occurred between the two vehicles however both men came off the bike as it became unstable and they were taken to hospital.

One of the men sustained life threatening injuries and is currently in a critical condition.

The second man sustained minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and theft of motor vehicle.
Put a smile on my face, hope it was the ****s that took my 250

Hope the next set of wheels he gets will have one either side of his arse, and one by each ankle... would it be cruel to ask 'does it wheelie mister...'
