Are Tactical Boots Good Enough?

I've been riding with a pair of 8" 5.11 brand boots. The two times I went down they definitely have protected my foot and ankles from any injuries. I've been reading the recent threads about boots. Are there any advantages that I should pay $300-plus for some specialized boots?

Those are more expensive than the motorcycle boots I have.

I would be concerned with making sure the laces wouldn't get caught on anything. They look like they would provide decent protection in a slide; however, I wonder of the impact protection on the ankle.

How is ankle movement in these boots? If they are allowed to move a lot side-to-side I would think that the probability of breaking your ankle is higher than in boots that prevent such movement.

There are good motorcycle boots for under $200 that will provide better protection. I'd recommend getting some, a broken ankle just isn't worth saving $200. Being able to get up and walk away from a crash is.

Nah, $300 is a lot. And it's just your ability to walk you're looking at. You can probably find new feet on craigslist for a bargain when the time comes so you don't have to drop all that money in advance just to protect you on the off chance you go down

Ankle doesn't move much when I tie it up tight. I just got these boots because they were required for MSF and that's what I've been riding in since.

I'll probably look into nice racing boots whenever they are on sale. Let me know!

Very informing video, I never knew that and I have been wearing some Nice sturdy work boots myself. I just always figured they would be "good enough" but I guess I will be looking for some like you. Oh well, I guess if they get trashed insurance will cover them anyway. Plus, it's still cheaper than an ER visit.

There technically isnt such a thing as good enough, its more as good as you can get or afford or is practical. The goal here isnt to wear what is ultimate because ultimate would be like a full armored suit/cage... aka a car roll cage. Our goal is just to wear anything and everything we can handle.

Tactical boots... definitely better than sneakers but still not as good as specialized boots. The advantages would be better everything, support, protection, blah blah blah... could go on and on like all other threads...

SUMMARY: You asked, means you know the answer and you are just looking for confirmation. Get more protection when you can, till then do whatever you can to not need it.

Probably the proto-types. These should be good for donkey speed though.

The ankle support is the same between cheap Moto boots and tactical boots, but nicer Moto boots have way more ankle protection. I was sponsored by daytona boots so use them but I don't expect you go drop 600-1200 on boots, alpinestar and sidi both make good stuff for half the price.

Even cheaper boots with less ankle protection are better imo. The will at least have hard plastic in areas that allow the boot to slide on the asphalt, this does offer some protection. Not to do with safety but tactical boots don't have a shifter pad so shifting will wear the top of the boot faster than a motorcycle specific boot.

A lot of people have good reviews about this budget boot:
