Why you should change your coolant before 3 years

bike has 10 000km on it, 6000 miles. Kept undercover, and rarely ridden in rain. It is 2 years old. This is kawasaki factory coolant.

white crap in the coolant means oil contamination, no? possible seal failure on the water pump or head gasket??? i suppose it could just be crap in the coolant. flush it all out and check again after 100 miles of riding... maybe check your oil too

its not oil. Coolant develops white crap in it over time. I have my cylinder head off atm and it is one of the cleanest i've seen. This build up of white crap was in the bottom of the reserve tank.

Coolant in the reservoir is not completely air tight and is exposed to air. In a pressurized system it is not. The ethylene glycol breaks down over time and becomes oxidized. The greenish-gray crude is the result. Add some heat and it drys fast.

I changed my coolant @ 3 years 10 months and under 24k miles. The coolant in my reservoir didn't look like that because I switched it out in the summer of 2011. Something the manual does not mention doing.

Its summer over here to. 95F yesterday. The coolant looked good until the last little bit. You said add heat and it dries fast, this is what it looks like after a day. And your right about the oxidation, this is what happens to coolant over time. This is the cause.

I use Engine Ice also. I don't have to drain it for winter. Best part? It's alright to use at Mid-Ohio

the orange stuff is propylene glyclol based and biodegradeable. If I go to the track I run the blue. I just don't like the blue due to the lack of freeze protection. Otherwise, I would leave it in all year.

its just 2 bolt, the rad cap, the reservoir tank. there is no hose involved. if your draining via the lower hose than you wouldn't even need to use the bolts at all actually.

Yeah, at £2.50 a litre of ethyl glycol coolant, and 37p a litre of reverse osmosis de-ionised water you can't go wrong.

The green stuff is cheap. I can use it in the bike and still have some left over to top off both cars.

Besides that the color matches my Hi Viz vest and tastes great.

So that's why they put the bittering agent in the fancy cool aid at the parts store
