Fuel indicator not reading full?

Fuel indicator does not go to full when tank is full, it does respond as the tank gets lower, though. Although its accuracy scares me, any ideas?

I did siphon gas out of the tank to empty, could that do anything?

Most 250's have the same issue due to an inaccurate fuel sensor. My bike reads half full when it's actually full. Use your trip meter to gauge when you need to get gas.

In my case how I fill up has a big impact. If I put the gas pump in 'center line' and stop at cut off I actually have about half a gallon (ish) of capacity in the tank left that I can fill if I lift up the dispenser a bit and eyeball things (very carefully, of course). When I do the second my gauge tends to go completely full instead of the 3/4ths or so if I don't.

To fill the tank, you need to manually fill it. You can't let the handle automatically shut off. Fill it until it just touches or just covers the bottom of the filler neck. If you fill the tank while the bike is upright, you can squeeze in a little bit more.

I never let the handle shut off in any bike, always do it to the top through looking. Filter neck, not sure of that term, basically the metal rim or lip around the tank near the top?

Basically as soon as it touches metal.

I find you can fill a bit over the fill-line, perhaps a 1/4 inch or so with no ill-effect. The fill-line is where there's a metal oval guard below the main metal ring that holds the hinged gas cap on. You can fill a tiny bit above that level pretty easily. I suspect the vacuum pressure hose would drip overfill gasoline out. My Honda Superhawk would pressurize if I went anything above the fill-guard and when parked (and maybe when riding) gasoline would drip out slowly, leaving a small spit-sized puddle underneath on the ground.

Fuel gauge is crap due to a resistor setting. On "E"mpty I still have 2 gallons left. It has to almost hit the bottom needle before I'm out. (proven)

There's a secondary fuel gauge. It's called the odometer.

Dis.

I use the trip meter. My gauge reads about half when the tank is close to empty. I found that in the service manual that it operates on resistance and it has resistance values for both. In my case, if I could add about 50 ohms of resistance to the fuel sender, it should display properly. But being my lazy ass, I'll just stick with the trip meter as I always have.

Nobody likes broken anything. But crappy fuel gauges are a known issue on some of our 250's. First make sure you're actually filling it all the way up. Then if it's still really bugging you and the bike's under warranty, you can try for a replacement sender and/or gauge with your dealer. Most owners figure out which way the gauge errs, and move on to more important things. YMMV.

Sorry, I'll remove the sassy pants.

Just remember a broken fuel gauge isn't the end of the world. You have an odometer that's a great way to tell how much fuel is in the tank. You can also open the lid and physically look. I think the gas gauge on the newgen is dumb, especially when you consider how often they don't work properly.

lol i didnt call you broken ****, i called the fuel pump broken ****
Look I got the info I was looking for, Common problem on these models. I could see if kawasaki would do anything since it has 1500 miles but probably not.
Next question is what part would fix this on the fiche, but the part is probably 200-300+

and if this is the correct part/fuel reader its only $57 http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/model...2449-fuel-tank

so I wonder if the problem is at the reader or on the gauge :\

Buy a cheap gauge set off ebay and see if that one works or not. That will tell you if it's the gauge or not.

Other option: fill the tank completely. Take off the plastic from the gauges. Pull off the needle, and re-install it so it's on the full marker with what you know is a full tank. Basically calibrate it.
