600 Single Roadracer

Anyone care to guess what engine parts were used in this home-built special ?
It was fast and loud.

Dual overhead cam timming belt drive
Single cyl four stroke.
Clutch on the left hand side of the transmission
Oil pan at the bottom looks funky

My un educated guess would be . Prototype engine derived from an auto engine.

Mated to a motorcycle transmission.

Anyone know about that crazy setup?

It appears to have belt driven cams. A cylinder and head from a Ducati maybe?

Not a Ducati. The belt drive monster engines are air cooled

The panigale 1199 is liquid with chain drive overhead cam

Multistrada also air cooled

- I cannot find any motorcycle engines that are dual over head can belt drive that configuration

The oil pan throws me off too

And the protruding crank shaft with the weird coupler on there is confusing

I even tried looking up prototype gti and diesel motorcycle singles.

I am researching on my iPhone

I wish the pics were higher def

it looks like an atv engine was stuffed into a custom frame that looks to be based on the mid 90s bmw designs. looks like it's missing its front cowl that has a ram-air scoop.

What kind of atv ? Rzr

I cannot think of any belt drive cam atvs??

And what's w the oil pan?

Ugh. I haven't slept enough in the last couple days .

Simone figure this out so I don't have to obsess

I've looked at many of these for reference if the builder removed the gear drive or chain drive cam assembly an replaced it with belt

Tl1000 vtr1000 panigale1199 monster sv1000 kfx700
Raptor660 trx700 rc51 rzr 800 and 570
Rc8
Yamaha four stroke sleds and skidoo are chain drive cam

Basically I've even tried some obscure car engines
I checked a bunch of cruisers that are vtwin all have finned/air cooled jugs

I am missing something!

I've been googling all kinds of engines because I cannot think of hardly any powers port belt drie cam motors

Right hand output and chain

Left side clutch w one off cover

Dual overhead cam belt drive

I guess whoever took the darn photo should've asked the builder some questions
@alex.s - the front lower engine mount makes me think you could be on to something about an atv engine

The battery box hanging off of the front of the motor sure looks like a crappy afterthought. LOL!

@Kevin1956 @alex.s

I doubted your guess too soon
Testastretta head!

Definitively a Ducati built top end

http://www.sigmaperformance.com/testastretta.html

You guys get to source the crank case and transmission !

It threw me because it seems they machined away a lot d the head to make it fit in the frame about the front corner

The casting and bolt holes line up though

Whatever it is, why the square tubing linked forks? I had a 46 Indian once. It had a linked fork design like in the photo. When braking hard the bike would lift. The suspension basically didn't work at all when braking hard. I don't see how this could work on what is obviously a track bike. Some of the bike looks innovative, some of it looks like farm equipment!

when setup correctly, it doesn't lift or compress under braking.
Quote:
The Hossack/Fior (marketed as Duolever by BMW) separates completely the suspension from steering forces. It was developed by Norman Hossack though used by Claude Fior and John Britten on racebikes. Hossack himself described the system as a 'steered upright'. In 2004 BMW announced the K1200S with a new front suspension that is based upon this design.

The cases remind me of an English bike with the cast motor mount. It looks like the motor/trans is unit construction. A mid sixties set of cases from a big English thumper of some sort?

it looks like the crank shaft with the three paws is for an external starter? i think the battery was an afterthought.

This is starting to remind me of a bike a friend once owned. He restores antique motorcycles. He had a bike that was built with a Flying Merkel frame and home made forks. The engine was a set of Harley 45" (flathead) engine cases with the rear cyclinder blocked off. Adapted to the cases was an OHV head and cyclinder assembly from a Lawrence Aircraft engine, which had a smaller bore than the HD cylinder. Direct drive, no trans, no brakes, total loss oiling system. The gas tank was made from a Nash headlight. The bike had a history that came with it. It set a top speed record for a 350cc bike around 1950 at Edwards Dry Lakes in California. I think it was less than 100 mph! LOL!

edit: nevermind the sprocket is on the wrong side
could it be a highly modified BSA b33 bottom-end? with billet side panels and a new cast bottom plate?

Was hoping to cheat and find where these pics were posted elsewhere on the net, but as far as I can tell you took these yourself and they are only here. The mystery continues...

(google chrome tip; hold shift-s over a picture and then hit the right-click mouse button, and it auto searches the internet by image )

Wow, I never expected much of a response to this thread.
The owner/builder is the guy in the red shirt in the first photo, and he was quite busy, so I didn't want to be a PITA and take up his time asking questions. What I do know is
Ducati 916 cylinder head, piston and rod.
One-off crank and engine cases
Home built FI and ignition systems (15 years ago!) Look at the size of that headpipe!
He built the frame to be adjustable in all aspects.

Mofo's brain was way above my paygrade.

Oh yeah, pics were taken by me, at Summit Point Raceway in W.Va. at least 15 years ago.

@alex.s - how did you identify the crank case as LC4 ?

I don't see the oil pan or front engine mount screaming LC4?

That bike is soooo custom.
I don't know where a project like that starts or ends!?
@Desmoluci - was he running the bike in some modified class? 15 years ago ? That's cool you held onto the pic and posted it ! Thanks

it was the only case i could find that was either a single or a twin that could be blocked into a single, that had the clutch on the left side, sprocket on the right, front left oil pump with the gear selector input shaft on the left behind the clutch instead of like the harleys and buells which is in the center between the crank shaft and the clutch housing. certain years of the lc4 have the 3-stack case with an oil pan. it sounds like its 100% custom but layout-wise its the same as the lc4 basically from the looks of it.

Sounds good to me! I've been looking all over the net at every Single and v twin I can think of and some I couldn't and I was stumped?

After you posted lc4 I tried searching the different years and I couldn't find one with a pan

But the whole right side chain left side clutch made me think ktm

I've been Measured weighed and left wanting.

I best get out the way and let you brains do the figuring!
