how to remove rear seat without key?

I got a 2008 bike for super cheap, but no key was included. It's going to be track only. I'm a day away from taking a sledge hammer to the rear seat to get it apart. Any advice before I get extreme?

I looked for similar threads here, and didn't come up with anything helpful. This was the closest, but it doesn't provide a great option...

Is the 2008 locking mechanism anything like the 2007? I'm pretty sure I can use a coat hanger, reach up from the rear tire area and hook the spring-loaded bar and pull it back, popping the rear seat. But it's probably all different, looking at google images.

seeing as they switched to separate seats w/the '08 I think it's more like the 300 where you wouldn't be able to do that

drilling or picking the lock seem to be the best options as of now

Yeah, it's unfortunately nothing like the 2007

Drilling the lock... interesting... I feel like the locking mechanism has to turn to move something under the seat to allow it to move. If I drill that out, don't I just screw myself more? I guess I can't get screwed more than I am...

There's 2 4mm screws under the seat that I can't get an allen wrench in. I was considering just drilling a hole in the seat to get at the screws but I wasn't sure that would even do any good. I was hoping something on these fairings or seat would be salvageable but at this point I'm kinda over it...

If your rear seat is nice and loose like mine was, you can take an allen key or any other similarly sturdy hook-shaped object and get under the seat to manually pull on the cable to unhook the seat. The cable is on the left side of the seat relative to the riding position. I had to do that when something in the locking mechanism broke and the key could no longer pull the cable enough to unlock the seat.

Hmmm... does anyone have a picture of what the bike looks like under the seat that they could post? Thank you!

But seriously, a pic or diagram of what it looks like under the seat would be really helpful. 'Cause I don't wanna look up microfiche.

I no longer have a 250 so I can't help there unfortunately but I can try my hand at a diagram from memory

A variation of this should work. If you can put tension on the cable that leads to the lock it'll pop it. If you had a cowl you can pop it with your finger.

With a seat it'll be more difficult but I think you could do it with a coat hanger.
