Gas and oil tanks are still hot an hour after bike is off. (Normal?)

Hi guys,

I ride a 2012 Ninja 250 and have a question for you. I've tried browsing the web and using the search here but turned no results.

I live in Las Vegas and I've noticed lately that after I ride around (even at night) and then turn the bike off when done riding I come out an hour later and the gas tank is still feels pretty warm/hot. The oil tank stays pretty hot too. Is this normal? The exhaust cooled down. Also the fan does come on after shut off and my coolant levels are fine and the oil was changed a couple months ago (I've got 3,4xx miles in it.

I understand the bike gets hot as is, and the. Being in 100+f weather it tends to get even more hot but I'm not sure if this is normal.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Absolutely it's normal. It will take quite a while to cool in that climate. Even down here, it's winter, my bike will still be plenty warm after it's been off for an hour

Totally normal.

Side note: consider changing your oil. It breaks down faster in a wet sump motorcycle than it does in a dry sump car.

What colour is it?

black absorbs heat better, and you're in Vegas, in july/august I'd guess it's hot out.

The exhaust reflects heat & contains less material so will cool down quicker

By oil tank I guess you mean the engine, oil goes into the engine through the filler hole in the clutch side casing.
(clutch side casing is on the right as you sit on the bike, nothing to do with the clutch lever on the left)

around this time it stays like 90+ F at night in vegas, dont expect things to cool down even at night.

The surfaces on a bike can easily remain "hot" just sitting in the sun. The engine (or coolant) temp can easily be 10 deg or so higher at start compared to a cool morning. This is an observation of my sv which has a digital temp gauge.

Vegas in August. I'm thinking, yeah, hot would be normal after sitting in the sun all day.

The cooling system shuts off and the heat moves up, making the tank hotter than it was during operation. This is why the tank can form a vacuum if you drive off after the bike sat fully warm and off for a short while.
