I see this as similar to an explanation of the physics of counter steering; interesting to some, but possibly confusing and leading to heated debate as well. Just as anyone who knows how to turn a two wheeled vehicle inherently knows how to counter steer, they also know, without necessarily understanding the physics involved, how to deal with roll, pitch and yaw.

so instead of pop a wheelie, it should be pitch a wheelie?

You already know how. Just get up to speed on your S1000RR and induce a highside.

The flight will be brief but interesting.

I started flying at 8 years old. I starting riding a motorbike at 5. I'm still riding a motorbike. Flying can be boring.

I wish I could still fly. I never once found it boring.

Shoot an ILS approach to minimums in a snowstorm and if you find that boring, something's wrong with you.

Take off on a gray November day after a solid two weeks of miserable weather with no sun, climb above the clouds and watch the sunset and if you find that boring, something's wrong with you.

Fly down the Hudson River corridor 500 feet above the river, below the tops of the Manhattan skyscrapers at night. If you find that boring, something's wrong with you.

Fly up the coast at night on the 4th of July, above the fireworks. If you find that boring, something's wrong with you.

Thing is, it makes track days look positively cheap. I just can't afford it.

Flying can be boring at times, but so can riding a motorcycle. It's even the same parts of each that sometimes gets boring, the cruise. ADouglas' highlights of flying are spot on, to add a few more:
  • Landing on grass
  • Landing on snow
  • Taxing on solid ice
  • Seeing a sunrise when the land is enveloped in fog
  • The sound of a turbine starting
  • Flying around mountains
  • Seeing a whale
  • Seeing a submarine
  • Any kind of aerobatics

Drew, my father was a professional pilot (Navy Lt. Commander, Captain for the airlines). We've had many different planes over the years since I was 8 years old. His idea of fun was to cover the windshield and fly by instruments. My idea was acrobatics, dive bombing boats, and just taking off and landing. I stopped being interested in planes when I started racing.

I was flying down the Hudson back in the 60s when the lights went out on New York. There are fun times but just not often enough for me. I'm the same way with boats. I guess I just had that stuff shoved down my throat when I was a kid. I had more fun with my grandfather who owned midget and sprint cars in IL.

I might feel different if I had a P-51!

Note that for any rotation of any bike (or airplane) around any of those three axis, the CG moves much slower than points that are distant from it.

When the bike is flicked over, the contact patches rolls out, the helmet rolls in and the CG remains on the line of the longitudinal axis.

Reducing rotational inertia is the reason behind engineers trying to concentrate as much mass as possible close to that CG and the reason for riders to keep the upper-body low.

For the same weight, bikes with shorter wheel base (sport) are more agile than bikes with long wheel base (cruisers).

Depends on what you fly, where you fly, and the purpose flight (mission) of the flight.

I started in a Piper Cub, Aeronica Champ, Cessna 150, Cessna 152, Beechcraft T-34 in North Africa and Spain. Ercoupe from Missouri to New York and Mooney in New York and Pennsyltuckey. Then a Beech Bonanza in Connecticut.

All flying was for fun (and being taught), not necessarily in that order.

Please don't take this to seriously, looks like you have an interesting aviation background... but limited. I'd compare it so someone who has putt putted on the interstates on a limited performance cruiser and claims he's a experienced MC rider and found it boring. Your experience in flying is nothing compared to what military pilots or Bush pilots experience.
Of course different missions can be routine but as a professional usually there are interesting challenges along the way. Aviation jobs like helo medivac, search and rescue, combat ops, severe weather, mountain ops, etc are what professionals deal with. So flying can be boring but it also can be exciting and challenging for a professional....Just like MC racing.

Like I originally stated, my father was a professional, Navy fighter pilot, airline pilot. He loved it! It just wasn't love for me. I'd compare my experience to riding Novice on the track instead of putt putt on a girls bike on the interstate. I have hundreds of hours flying (mostly punishment). I'm not down playing it for those who love it, I just find others things more intune for my lifestyle.

Settle down guys, no one is insulting anyone.
This simple animation explains the obtuse phenomenon of ''speed wobble" in perfect detail.

You'd have to check your pulse if you didn't want to fly then! (For me, it's the P-38).
