THE new Ducati 1299 Panigale S has lapped Mugello only four seconds slower than Carlos Checa’s World Superbike Panigale.

Ducati test rider Alessandro Valia set a time of 1’55.3 during testing at the Italian circuit, only four seconds slower than the 1’51.2 time set by Nicky Hayden during 2013 development testing on Checa’s race bike.

Valia said: ‘During my first test of the 1299 Panigale S on the Mugello circuit, in fact, I managed to obtain a best lap that shocked me: 1'55.3! A really incredible time for a production bike - with lights, turn signals, and mirrors,

‘The new steering head angle and other changes to geometry have produced tangible benefits especially for large-radius curves, making the front end more stable, precise, and effective in finishing turns,

‘Moreover, thanks to the new Öhlins Smart EC suspension, which also includes the very useful electronic steering damper, the 1299 is able to move seamlessly from maximum track performance to comfortable road use,’

Ducati’s new sports bike uses a version of the 1199 Panigale’s engine, rebored to 1285cc, now making 205hp and 107ft.lb of torque.

A new electronics package is fitted to the 2015 model, meaning the 1299 gets cornering ABS and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC). The quick shift system now works during down-shifting and Ducati say the Engine Brake Control (EBC) has been optimised by an automatic calibration system which allows for easy changes in tyre size and final drive ratio.

The 1299 S version will be fitted with Ohlins Smart EC, an 'event-based control system for the suspension'.

Visordown will be riding the 1299 Panigale at Portimao circuit at the end of this month for the official launch.
