Gas tank leaking from underneath
As the title says, my tank has a leak. It is on the bottom, on the Right, near the front. Somewhere near the mounting bracket thing. I still have not find the exact location, and I fear it may be under the bracket.
What are my realistic options? I don't see any pregen talks on eBay at the moment, and oem is life $800. Searching find people suggesting everything from Bondo, to redkote, to peanut butter to welding. Everything has people saying it works and others saying it doesn't. What words of wisdom can you give me?

Contact your local radiator shop, they should be able to repair the leak, and maybe coat/seal the tank.

It's almost certainly the fairing screws; someone put the long ones in the bottom by accident, or simply screwed the existing ones in too hard. There was a recall for this quite awhile back for a small percentage of pre-gens who may have been given the wrong screws at the factory, so check your vin with kawi on the off-chance you can still get a free tank for the problem.
Like you've stated, I've seen a variety of fixes. Some say JBweld works fine, others don't. Some use quicksteel + jbweld, some find other ways to patch the hole. However you do fix it, make darned sure you are using the correct screws and don't overtighten, so you don't put the hole right back into your repair.

I don't think it is the farting screw issue. The leak is on the bottom of the tank. Out send to be coming from underneath the "bracket" that slips over the rubber thing when you install the tank.
I am sure there are proper terms for all this, but I don't know what they are.

Ive had success in using some of that putty that you cut off then knead into one color then apply. I think the reason most people fail at this is because they dont apply pressure to the putty for long enough. I kneaded mine, applied it, then held my hand on it firmly for 30 minutes because the instructions said to hold it until it starts to harden, and said it hardens in 30 minutes. You might call that overkill, i call it a tank without a leak in it anymore. Just grab your smartphone, sit on the ground, and firmly apply pressure for 30 minutes, and let out a loud, painful groan when youre done.

Personally this needs to fixed properly, we are talking about gas leak right above a hot engine.
Take the tank to a professional, if you don't have the proper tools to fix it.

Well stated! I'm not a fan of snake-oil coatings (Kreem, etc.) or glue for fixing fuel leaks.

Almost all radiator shops do motorcycle tank repairs, and even some will do the professional coating as well. Money well spent.

I have seen that kind of leak near the front tank to frame mount before due to rust. Is your tank rusted on the inside.
I think I still have a black pregen gas tank in my spare parts pile. PM me if you are looking to buy a used tank. |
