Brake Light Lever Switch Adjustment

So I'm trying to adjust this switch because the brake light activates way too late--I have to be pushing the rear brake lever pretty hard to get the brake light to activate.

However, I can barely get a 16mm wrench in there to loosen the plastic locknut. In fact, once I get it in there, I can't turn it at all to loosen it. And after I do get it loosened somehow, I have to turn the switch threads to adjust the actual switch, which I have no idea how I'm going to do that in such a tight space--I can't even get my fingers in there.

Anyone know an easy way to get in there? Or is it just a bitch either way?

A service manual would be useful... You can find a PDF on Google

Might try a little lube on the plunger the spring hooks on to. On a bike I just bought, the plunger is sticky and takes a while to slide out from the spring pressure. Little lube fixed it right up, no adjustment needed.

It doesn't say anything about the rear brake lever switch. The wiki shows you how to do it, but doesn't mention anything about it being too tight tight of a space. I might try needle-nose pliers..

So here's what the wiki says about the rear brake lever switch:

"After you loosen the locknut, turn the threaded cylinder counter-clockwise to make the switch close earlier. If the light won't come on, make the connection longer; if it won't go off, make the link shorter. If you have to make several turns of the brake light switch to reach your desired setting, you should unplug the switch first, to avoid causing damage to the wiring by twisting.

There's a little lightweight spring that pulls a plunger that closes the circuit. You can also check the switch by gently pulling down on it from behind where the spring attaches to it. If the ignition is on, the brake light should come on. This is the spring to which the switch attaches."

Again, there's no way to loosen the locknut using a basic 16mm wrench, because once you place the wrench over the locknut to loosen or tighten, you can't move the wrench left or right at all.

And after you do have the locknut loosened, I'm not sure how I would turn the threaded cylinder because I can't get my hands in there. Again, I could try using some needle-nose pliers, but I don't want to wreck the threads.

I'm just curious if anyone else on here has messed with this switch and what they've done to combat the tight space..

Remove the side panel under the seat and remove the whole footpeg bracket. Adjust it up and put it back.
