*cough* Same happened to me. I lube the chain like clockwork, but had to leave the bike for a week when it snowed. I know it's just cosmetic rust on the outside of the links, but still rankles. Considering using some 'rust converter' paint on the outside of my chain that's supposed to stop the rust, but it'll take a long time to repaint the chain links one at a time with sufficient care I don't get paint where it shouldn't be.
If it's on the rollers, it should clear up with a little riding as it rubs off. Then just re-lube. That said, I'm anxiously waiting a better answer, preferably one that doesn't include replacing the chain.

Scrub it off as well as possible, lube right over it, and repeat as necessary.

I noticed a few rust spots on my chain as well when I was replacing the rear tire. I don't lube my chain enough, and my bike stays outside though.

There is a product called "Corrosion-X" available at most Marine Supply stores. You put some on a rag and wipe down your chain. Wait 12 Hrs. and wipe the chain down with a clean rag. Lube with your favorite chain lube. I used that stuff on my bicycle chains which were exposed to salt water a lot--We lived on a sailboat for 14 years and have gotten quite good at fighting rust.

excellent advice, thk u.
i'm going to order that stuff online and work the chain. i'm a bit cautious of scrubbing the chain because i don't want to damage any rubber (o rings). and i definitely don't want to change a one year old chain! i'm a commuter that does about 5 miles (total) a day, in DC, your nation's capital. still, i want to keep the bike up to speed and well "greased".
thanks for your advice. it's been taken, and you've earned 5 gold starz! |

When you scrub the chain use a nylon brush and you will not have any problems with the o-rings. You need to clean/scrub the chain regularly to keep gunk from building up on it.

Use a chain cleaning product and a nylon brush, then use a thick product like Chain Wax rather then some of the thinner bodied lubes. Being in an area that can Salt the roads for bad winter weather, the salt ignores the thinner bodied lubes if you happen to get any on the chain as you ride.
