In a repeast of last year's opening session, Jonathan Rea was quickest on a track that suffered from rain at the start. Michael van der Mark was second quickest ahead of Alex Lowes and title contenders Toprak Razgatlioglu and Scott Redding. Alvaro Bautista made it five manufacturers in the top six in a demonstration of how balanced the rules are.
