Your seatbelt isn't fastened

A customer comes in today. On her way here she was pulled over by local law enforcement officer. The officer walks up to her driver's window (right beside her) and tells her that she pulled her over because her "driver side" seat belt isn't buckled, which is required by law in this state.

Ok... this woman delivers mail on a rural route and her car is a Jeep Cherokee with right hand drive. Just picture this... wow! Her purse was in the left front seat, she asked the officer if the purse needed to be buckled in. The cop then told her.... law enforcement really don't like these British cars.

But... the "driver's side" is whichever side the driver is on!
It would be very strange if the law specified the left seatbelt instead of the driver's side.
Also, I have a feeling that USPS vehicles aren't subject to the state's vehicle laws.
Sounds like a LEO just having a bad day.

This doesnt make any sense as posted drivers side of the car is the side in which the vehicle is operated from.

I've seen rural mail carriers using standard left drive cars that have the "drivers ed" gas and brake pedals on the passanger side. They sit right, use the duplicate pedals, but reach across to the steering wheel. Crazy sight to see.

This was probably the classic girl with too large of breasts for seat belt to fit and cop just wanted to warn her about the laws (of nature). I know I like to help in these situations.

That's BS. In nanny states with seatbelt laws, anyone in the front seat(s) must have their seatbelt on. Doesn't matter which side. I also find it hard to belive that a cop would pull over a mail carrier.

Why are they above the law too?

Basically. Plus, have you ever seen a mail truck speeding?

The jeep is all white.. but does have US Mail stickers.. one front and one rear. I would estimate her age at about 60 yrs old. She was not delivering mail at the time, she was on her way here. I don't think this lady would make this up... she's been a customer here for longer than I've worked hear (9 yrs) and she's pretty trust worthy in my opinion. The cop was.. how'd she say it... "at least 100 lbs over weight" and was a woman.

Actually if you read the law as written, there is exemptions in most states that say a mail carrier, trash truck driver, and some others are exempt. The reasoning is due to the short distances they cover and making many stops. Now there is also a statement in the law that states once they finish their route they must put on the belt.

I used to teach EVD (Emergency Vehicle Driver) courses for my fire department and used to know the law like the back of my hand.
