Ca motorcycle title transfer - do i take the bike?

Hi guys,
so today I took my used '07 Ninja 250 home, and I have 10 days to get the Title transferred to me. Question for those living in California: do you just take all the paperwork to the DMV (such as old title, registration and such) or you have to take the motorcycle as well so they can check the VIN number?

Thanks!!

If you got a AAA membership, all you need to do is to take all of the paperwork there (no bike) and pay for req'd registration fees. I'm not too sure about the regular DMV though.

I would bring the motorcycle, I know for a car that you need to bring it to the DMV to check vin, mileage etc.

I bought a used 2008 in June in San Diego and didn't bring my bike. Just title and registration (old owner brings in bill of sale). When I moved here, car needed an inspection and smog since I was out of state. I believe you dont need to as long as it's a CA title and registration (I think you need to wait for the bike to have 7500 miles for out of state).
Bikes here currently don't need smog inspections (bill is in place for 2012, so vote no!). That's my experience from 2 months ago so can't imagine it'd be different for you (aren't the VIN's on the engine anyway).

Thank you all! I didn't find a definite answer on the DMV website, so I thought I would ask someone that's done it before

wtf, I didn't think of AAA, thank you! I do have membership and I found out there's an office 3 miles away from my house, so I'll just have them handle everything Thanks for the tip!

You will need proof of insurance and will be asked to present it. If you can, get your insurance to give you a temporary (unless your bike is insured through AAA) to allow you to get through the transfer of ownership completed. Nothings worse than having to make several trips.

Congrats on the new-to-you bike

No need to bring your bike. You just need to take the pink slip signed by the previous owner, pay tax, they give you the registration and you'll get your pink slip by mail in about 2 weeks.

Thank you! I have insurance already so either way I'm taking everything to AAA just in case. I'm just so glad I can avoid the DMV this time!

They do if the vehicle is from out of state. I'm from Chicago and when I moved here they made me take my car to the DMV to check it out. I guess it doesn't apply to CA vehicles

Yup, when I registered a BMW bike that was last registered out of state, I had to bring the bike in to the DMV for them to verify the chassis and engine numbers on the actual vehicle. This was even though the bike was initially purchased and registered within California.

Yea I moved to Riverside from CT, and when I changed the title/registration on my car they had an officer come out and check my car's VIN and mileage.

damn, ca is strict. that doesn't make any sense.
in jersey you don't have to bring your car or bike until you're ready for inspection.

So I went to AAA today and they did everything in 15 minutes! All I needed was the old title and the registration. Super quick!
