Tail Light + Brake Light Not Working (Bulb Replaced)
Title just about sums it up. Have had the bike for about 2 months now and assumed the bulb burned out since the tail and brake light had been working at the purchase. After replacing the bulb I still get nothing. Tried searching but only found posts talking about brake lights not working while tail lights were OK.
I am not a mechanic by any means, and this is my first bike, so I am not sure what the problem might be. Any suggestions are appreciated! |

There is a 10amp taillight fuse in a little box under the seat. Check to see if it is blown. You will have to remove the side panels to get the seat off. Your owner's manual should be able to help you also. This thread has a good pic of were the fuse box is located. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15388

OK, replaced the fuse with 1 of the spares, turned the key and it blew again immediately. Changed it once more and same thing. Short? Where might it be?

Sounds like a short. Did you replaced the fuse with thr right size amp? Check the wires. Make sure you check the wires in the tail also.

Follow the wires by the fues and just make sure they are alright(no bare wires showing). You will see the wire to your tail light when you take off your back seat.

All wires seem ok, nothing disconnected or bare.
I have a vertical license plate that came with the bike. It has 2 LEDs that are not working either. However, both rear turn signals are. Any suggestions? I can see on the wiring diagram that the running/brake and license plate lights are connected in some way. Does that locate the problem at all? |

You should also check to make sure that the brake light switches are not shorting out. Unplug the brake light switches, replace the bulb with a correct replacement, replace the fuse and see if the fuse still blows. Plug in the switches one at a time to see if the fuse blows. the shorting switch will blow the fuse. If that is the case replace the faulty switch. Check the battery and all other connections as well.

This isn't a mechanical issue, it's electrical. All you need to do is trace your lines. If a fuse keeps blowing, it's because it's grounding out somewhere. This means you have an exposed wire that's touching metal.
