17mm is metric, everything on the bike is metric Don't ever use something that isn't the exact size or you'll end up stripping it

You can use either, most use a 1/2" - better?

The oil drain bolt requires a torque of 19.6 NM. I don't think I've ever seen an 1/2" drive torque wrench that accurately measures that low of a torque. 1/4" drive torque wrenches cannot go that high. 3/8" drive is what you want. However you can still use a 1/2" drive socket with a 3/8" drive torque wrench if you use an adapter. Last futzed with by dino74; May 10th, 2011 at 10:15 AM. Reason: grammar |

One question about torque wrenches:
Do 12 inch pounds = 1 foot pound? I'm just curious if it converts, because I bought a torque wrench that goes from 120 inch pounds to 960 inch pounds. I'm assuming this will work. |

Jenn, you're lookin for like 172 inch pounds (172 in lbs). Most likely you're gonna wanna get a 3/8" drive torque wrench and then a 3/8" drive 17mm socket.

I agree, go with the 3/8ths.
One more thing I'd like to add, and if you know this already I apologize, but for anyone who doesn't; don't EVER use your torque wrench to loosen a nut or bolt. I have had several co-workers do this and completely wreck the torque wrench. Basically, you can damage the internal mechanism and from then on you think you are torquing to 19.6 Nm but in reality it is less than that. |
