Acetone in your tank?

I just found this video on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHAUs...feature=relmfu

After a quick search on google, adding acetone really appears to be something that can reduce your mileage.
Has anyone tried this on his/her beloved ninja?

I saw a blurb about this on the local news a while back. They said it didn't do anything.

I just take everything on youtube with a grain of salt.

He never mentions the biggest factor in gas mileage which is your foot/throttle hand. I have a Scan Guage II and it's incredibly helpful in increasing gas mileage by making you aware of when you are using more gas than you should be (i.e. coast when you see a redlight). A quick way to double your gas mileage is to simply tailgate a semi, they block all the wind for you. My car typically gets 16mpg, when tailgating a semi I get 40mpg.

yeah, but I'm actually trying to concentrate on the acetone matter.
I've been reading multiple sites now and it seems that you can get up to 30% improvement, no disadvantages.
For our ninjette, which is already cheap in gas, this could be very interesting.

The only thing acetone will do is increase your octane...
If all you have access to is bad fuel it could help

Saving gas for us depends more on gearing and aerodynamics.

Personally I would not put anything in my tank other than gas and stabilizer. Nothing more. Without real credible evidence that adding a mystery liquid to my engine will solve the fuel crisis I'll stay with what works.

This "trick" has been around for years.

http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/acetone.asp

Don't you think if it really worked, the masses would have caught on and the price of acetone would have skyrocketed by now?

+1 I run carb cleaner through every 4th tank also, just to make sure everything stays clean in there if I get bad gas or whatnot. I guess I ride frequently enough in the summer that I likely don't need to take this step, but it's not expensive and isn't hurting anything

I can't imagine it would be friendly to any seals, gaskets, or o-rings as well.

Gas by itself also breaks down stuff and works as somewhat of a acid (albeit not a strong one but it does damage some things).

For a tank our size they suggest no more than a cap (that little cap on the bottle of acetone) of it just to help clean it out. It's not suggested for continual use, just as a quick inexpensive cleaner. The more responsible sites also warn you to use caution as too much of it can put extra wear on the internals of your engine. It's the fact that a cleaner motor will get better mpg that some people/sites say that acetone in your gas will improve your mpg. The acetone doesn't actually do that, but a cleaner motor will.

I would actually suggest using fuels that are known to have less harmful and more effective cleaning agents in them. They work better, don't add any cost to you, don't add any more corrosives to your fuel, and can be used non-stop. I personally fill up at the Shell station near my work for both the cleaning agents that Shell uses, and because it's oddly enough one of the cheaper stations in my area.

I think some cleaners also use a small amount of it in their formulas but I'm not sure.

A simple search on the subject will turn up all kinds of evidence that debunks this myth. However if you are looking for a way to possibly increase your fuel MPG and engine performance check out this thread. http://www.ninja250forum.com/index.p...6&topic=4696.0

Mentioned before, but I don't think there's going to be a magical chemical to increase your MPG at a noticeable rate. It's all about how you drive/ride. In the summer I was getting around 35-45mpg but now that it's winter and I can't ride aggressively, I am back up to around 60mpg haha. The one advantage to cold.

actually, what surprised me was that hes using 87 oct. in a acura, those honda 3.2l engines like 91 oct. (atleast the ones i've worked on here in canada). so i'm gonna guess that all the acetone is doing is upping the octane rating like lgk said, or something of the sort.

Driven sensibly, I never seen a 4 cyl get below 25mpg.

I'm thinking he had some major problems with his vehicle, or spent multiple afternoons at the drag strip...

From Chrysler, yes it's believable. Up until recently they had the worst fuel economy of any of the major brands in the US. They had their 4-cyl cars making on average what some GM V8's were making in economy. If you look back they had cars with 4-cyl getting on average (from factory rating which we all know is inflated anyway) anywhere from 19-28 mpg combined.

Well stock, sure. I even get 21+ in my tacoma. But who can keep a suby stock?
