A scary thought

I received an email at work from a friend warning me of the dangers of being on a motorcycle. I hope this never happens to any of us.

"The Honda crotch rocket rider was traveling at approximately 85 mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The riders reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.
All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department.
Pass this on to car drivers or soon to be new drivers, or new motorcycle owners."

I can't stand inconsiderate cagers. Those idiots on their cellphones are the equivalent of our squids doing wheelies on the freeway at 100MPH. The very least they could do is get a hands-free device.

Edit: I'm not saying it's not also the biker's fault, but my point stands.

I'm fairly certain that the bike was going faster than 85 when it hit. Still kind of surprised the bike made it past the perimeter braces in the door.

I've seen these photos countless times over the past few years, each time with a different story attached....this being the first time I have heard THIS particular story with these photos lol.
So who knows the truth. I really doubt the bike was only going 85 though.

Also, as far as making past the doors....I believe this is in Europe (maybe Germany or Sweden?), and I don't think they have the same safety regulations on cars that we have (especially given the age of the car). If you look at the first picture, you can see a sign in the background in a different language.

Regardless, it's a damn amazing set of pictures.

I have been seeing that set of pics for several years now. But it still has an affect on me.

And even if the story is true -- going 85 on a road with sideroads? That's... questionable.

The point we and cagers should get from this is not to use the cell phone while driving. Hopefuly this brings the point home.

Here are a couple of links that agree that it's from Sweden.

Volkswagen Golf Meets A Motorcycle At 155 MPH, Doesn't Go Well

http://www.wreckedexotics.com/newpho...d/bad570.shtml

The detail that I notice, in the second and third pictures at the start of this thread, is that the frame of the car was cut apart. I'm sure that was done by the rescue team, that's what they're supposed to do. I think they'd open the car and remove the bike at the scene in order to attend to the victims. It seems that afterwards, the Swedish Police decided to put it all back together and use it as a very effective object lesson.

At least that's one version...

Time for me to get a new phone.

I've found one I'm really excited about.

Check out all the things it DOESN'T have.

... no touch screen
... no QWERTY keyboard
... no Web
... no music player
... no apps
... no games
... AND IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A CAMERA!

How cool is that?

It's a PHONE. As in something you use to talk to people. And I can even get it to actually RING!

I'm SO psyched.

The way I see it, cell phones have just enabled people to have an additional level of stupid with even more graphic consequences. They've been just plain stupid far longer than cells have existed (eg. drunk drivers).

I had a similar near-collision about a week ago when someone pulled out from a side-road on the right without looking, some 30ft in front of me. However, between having been traveling the speed limit (25mph) and me being mentally prepared for him to do something stupid when I saw he was on his cell, no physical harm done. Scared the $#!7 out of me though. I don't think he even noticed that he and his BMW SUV almost got T-boned, despite me laying on the horn.

I have seen these pictures many times also. The story I heard was that the person had just traded a Kawi 250 in for a bigger bike. The salesperson tried to talk the new rider (who had only been riding for 6 months) out of upgrading and thought the riders should stay with the 250 for longer (250 only had 1500 miles on it). The rider bought the bike, while leaving the dealer parking lot gave the bike too much throttle(being used to a 250), and after wheeling for 100 feet finally got the front wheel down and immediately hit a parked car. The car had no one in it and the rider was thrown over the car and landed in a bunch of bushes. Luckily the rider had a helmet on and had no injuries. The car, the bike, and the bushes were all totalled.

Looking at the damage, that doesn't sound plausible. That crash had to involve a heck of a lot of kinetic energy... way more than would be possible after traveling only 100 feet on the rear wheel.

I think the parking lot scenario is quite realistic (newbie overcooking it and hitting a car), but I can't see the bike actually penetrating the door and winding up inside the car in such a situation.

He didn't say what angle it was parked in. If it was a heavy bike and it hit the car head-on, I don't know, plausible maybe. Call Adam Savage and find out.

LOL... nope. Brand-new Nokia, just introduced last month. Really tiny, really simple. EXACTLY what I need.

I think the manufacturers might be waking up to the fact that not everyone wants a smartphone.

I hate the freakin' things. The moment somebody picks one up they disengage from their surroundings EVERY SINGLE TIME. That's rude at the very least, and life-threatening at the worst.

I write about technology for a living. I'm surrounded by it all day long. A big part of the reason I bought my bike was to allow me to get away from it for a few precious minutes a day.

What a waste of three lives and a Honda just for a display.

If you were genuinely concerned for my safety and thought this could convince me to be safe, I wouldn't take offense. I have a neighbor/friend who keeps begging me to get rid of the bike because he says he doesn't want to see anything bad happen to me. Maybe he witnessed me unknowingly doing something stupid once, but he's expressing genuine concern so I'm not taking offense.

Not the first time I've seen pictures like this. The same thing happened here locally a few years back. Kid on a new Honda Interceptor fresh from the dealership decided to test it's accelleration on a main street in town. Driver pulled out from a side street without even seeing him coming up so fast. The bike went into the car and killed both of them instantly. This is not unusual or some kind of urban myth. Unfortunately **** like this happens more often than you would like to think and it won't stop until dealers stop selling vastly overpowered bikes to customers with little or no experience.

Hey Wayne, haven't seen you on (well haven't talked to you in a while). How was your riding season.

Kids who drive or ride with no experience don't realize just how quickly you can parrish. I feel I only made it this long was because I started riding and driving in CT, on country roads, with no traffic to speak of. I road and drove everything I touched to the max. This was back in the day when there was no suspension and no brakes (like there are today). You can't do that today (and live to tell about it).

Hi Tom. I was really surprised at the large number of bike accidents we had out here in the boonies this summer. There seemed to be more of them and a lot more of them were fatals than usual. The days when you only had to worry about a tractor or the odd cow in the road are well over out here in the farmlands and you never know what's going to shoot out of a side street at you.
To tell the truth, this riding season really sucked for me. I've never seen so much rain. Kept waiting for the constant spring rains to give way for a nice dry summer, but it never happened. Even the few nice days we had for riding came with wind gusts of 30-50mph, blowing the Ninja all over the road. There were only a couple of days where you could just sit back and enjoy the ride without worrying about the sky opening up or trash barrels being blown into the road in front of you. All the weather delays and days between riding made for a season where I never felt like I got into a groove at all. It felt like every day I got on the bike was like the first ride of the season. There were a lot of times when I swore to myself if this weather pattern repeats again next year it's time to move to a more bike-friendly climate. Now it's time to winterize the bike and I hardly feel like I rode enough to justify the insurance, inspection and registration fees for the year.
Of course at this point I'm hoping next season will be better and I'll put on a bunch of miles in 2010 for a change. Considering that I was unemployed all year and could ride whenever I wanted to, the days that was actually possible sure were few and far between. I'm really starting to appreciate the way Red Sox fans usually feel this time of year - bring on spring training! Heck, I'd be happy if I could get in a tenth of the total miles you put in every year down there in FLA.

Wayne, I did a few thousand miles on that old Honda this past August and September up in Rhode Island. June and July was a wash but it got beautiful after that.

It has gotten beautiful down here and it will be until May when it gets hot. I'll be thinking about you up there in the snow (everytime I ride).

Yeah, there were a couple of weeks at the end of the summer here that were pretty good, but that was about it. They were followed by a freak October 15th snowstorm and things got back to normal - crappy. I don't know if it a permanent climate change because of global warmimg or not, but I need more than 2 months a year of good riding weather. A move to Florida or the southwest is probably the only way I'll get it at this rate. Throwing on a balaclava and long underwear and riding in 30-degree weather isn't quite as appealing to me as it used to be.
