Strange piece found in the oil.
Hi everyone,
I have found some piece of metal stuck to the magnet of the oil drain plug today. I checked various diagrams and cannot seem to find anything similar. Do you have an idea where this can potentially come from ? The engine and the gearbox are working just fine. It has a square cross section and seems to be made of a hard magnetic metal. It looks like a cut of a half circle. Thanks in advance. |

I'd need some more photos, but I don't think that is hexagonal in cross section. The first post even says it's square in cross section.

Jim it is square, at first I thought it was some sort of spring that broke, but it looks rigid and the edges look cut, not cracked . It could also be some sort of home made stopper pin placed somewhere instead of oem by previous owners or shops. Mistery...

Looks like the piece of a helicoil that you punch out after installing it.

Is there a Helicoil in the drain plug thread? That makes more sense than a spark plug thread if you found it in the sump stuck to the drain plug. |

Thanks a lot guys. This has been really helpful. BTW to put the size into prospective that red tray in the picture is a cup from a 2 inch moly grease tube |

The shavings are from tapping hole to install the helicoil. If your only issue is finding this in your oil I’d say your good. Oil pans are really good at letting stuff fall to the bottom and not cause any issues.

Thanks Keith, that makes total sense. Yes thats the only worry. Otherwise everything seems to be alright with the engine. I think this winter I will replace the screen cover with the pan from the new gen. Then I will not need to use this drain plug and will be using the one on the pan. I already got all the parts - the pan new gasket and the correct bolts.I just need to figure out the brackets for the fairings. Right now the fairings bracket is bolted to the screen cover.
