Dreaming big! (Moving up... eventually)

My thought had been to save up this year and buy a new toy 250 dual sport to play with along with my Ninjette. Hence the test ride on the RX3.

My truck, however, had other plans and decided that a rather pricey piece would just FAIL! Hosing not only my vacation this summer but my idea of a toy bike in this year or the next.

So, since I am now looking two years out, that's getting close to my bike's perceived retirement goal. Rather than looking for a toy bike, I need to shift thoughts and look more at a long term bigger enduro that will serve as a replacement.

My goal is a bike that will handle long distance road riding 80% of the time, with the remainder on graded jeep trails and fire roads 15% and maybe rough rocky terrain 5%.

So I am asking opinions, suggestions, and comments from my fellow Ninja riders.

The current considerations are

Honda NC700X or CB500X
Triumph Tiger 800
BMW F650GS (older) or G650GS (newer)

Primary considerations are seat height, I can just tip toe 32in/812mm. Secondary are larger displacement, mid weight, electrical capacity, tank size, luggage options, and such and such. Cost I would prefer to keep it under $7k so used is my market.

Another thought is a friend has offered to build/customize an existing bike and make it "Teri-sized", building exactly the bike I want.

Any help?

Have you considered the Kawasaki 600 endure? Has plenty of power for the highway and great for off road.
BTW, I hope you have long legs because most endure/dirt bikes a fairly tall.

Hmm, my gut instinct is the triumph but the bmw fits your riding more since triumphs can be hard to work on if they break down. The hondas are better in that respect since parts are cheaper but the bmw and triumph are simply better bikes, though largely in terms of features. I know I would go for the triumph myself but you are not me and you ride more than me as well as in a different style from me.

I have no doubt you'll be able to find the best bike for you though

You mean the KLR 650? Too tall. Even sitting in the showroom I can't reach. The ones I listed are all under 32" seat.

I know nothing about the Tiger aside from I can reach as I've sat on one before. How are costs (labor/parts) between the two?

I need to research more. Mostly looking for a place to start.

Costs are similar between BMW and Triumph the downside is that the parts are more expensive and a bit harder to source than your typical japanese bike. BMW is better than triumph in this respect as it's easier to find a shop that can get bmw parts in than it is to find a shop for triumph parts. This is where bmw also being a major car manufacturer helps since you can order parts from them.

This is only an issue if you end up stranded far from home though which should not happen if the bike is running properly. Reputation has it that the bmw is more reliable though. If I may put one suggestion in, whatever you get get something with shaft drive. You ride enough to really appreciate the difference in not needing to maintain your chain and sprockets.

You wouldn't be happy with the 650 BMW's for long-distance riding. It's a buzzy single that might make it mechanically for your needs, but highway speeds for days at a time just wouldn't be fun. I think either of the Hondas could work for your on-road needs, but neither would be much fun off-road, and wouldn't stand up well to your need for 5% rocky terrain. The Tiger 800 could make a great long-distance bike, but again, it's not suited for much off-road work.

I don't think there is a bike out there that will meet all of those needs with flying colors. While it would be nice to settle on one do-it-all bike, it might make more sense to get two bikes depending on the where the day takes you.

Flying colors? Yeah, you're right, nothing is perfect for everything. My issue with to bikes is mostly cost, can't afford two.

Fire roads and basic dirt is the main thing around here. The rocky part is very small sections just in between the easy stuff so not looking for a tank. Mostly just want to do a bit more than what I already take the Ninja on. lol

Versys is probably still to tall without modification. Doable from the research i've done though.

I'll jump in and say the new 650 Versys looks promising if you are looking for a bike in that category -

http://www.cycleworld.com/2014/09/30...intermot-2014/

Is seat height an issue? For an experienced rider I can't image it would be. No need to "flat-foot" or have both feet down firmly IMO.

The Honda NC700 is a turd...

Just a bit on my view of seat height...

Do I need to flat foot? No.

Under ideal circumstances, just getting the ball of one foot stable on the ground is enough to comfortably control the bike. Even needing to lean slightly to do that is ok.

But under less than ideal circumstances, if I cannot get my toes planted (being able to slightly bend my toes to create a flat surface) on both sides, I am not strong enough to keep the bike from falling. I sat on a loaded KLR 650 where I could just barely touch the tip of one boot to the ground. When it started to lean I tried to stablize it, but by the time it was leaned enough to put my toes flat, it was too far over for me to push back up. I was stuck, just sitting there on the showroom floor.

So nope, not looking at anything over 32".

I would go with the NC700X or the NC750XA, with the gas tank under the seat "à la BMW" it will help in the weight department.

I think it would be the best for your 85% of the time and a great choice for the other 15%, as of the last 5%, be going slowly, you could get away with it...

Have you tried the RX-3? Or planned to?

Speaking of Honda... Get an older Trans-Alp! If it has to be new though, look at the BMW 650, 700 and 800.

At the end of the day, it will have to come down to how they feel. So go test ride some and see what they feel like...

For those suggesting the RX3, I'll quote myself from the OP

Quote:
My thought had been to save up this year and buy a new toy 250 dual sport to play with along with my Ninjette. Hence the test ride on the RX3.
As I am no longer leaning to an additional bike, but a replacement, the RX3 is out. That'd be a fun bike for "local" rides, but the type of riding I enjoy means I need a support network across the country.

I'm kinda liking the NC700X so may be swinging by Honda this weekend.

A friend of mine in England just sold his TransAlp. I like that thing. Never seen one though and the stats say the same as most other adventure bikes, too tall.

Sorry for my "frenchitude", but can I assume you didn't try the RX3?

I can understand very well your need for a network for the kind of long distance riding you're doing...

Back to the NC700X, I'm sure you already read about it, but the extra 50 cc from the NC750XA seems to make the bike much better.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. Yes, I tried it, went down to Azusa for a test ride and met Steve to ask the few questions I had after reading through the reviews and ADV thread.

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...153#post983153

It's actually 75cc more than the 700 since the actually cc's are lower than the number. No, I hadn't read that one yet. But definitely will look into it too.

*scans through thread*

This sounds shallow and I wish it wasn't but looking at the pictures, nothing about that bike is appealing to me. Some bikes I can point to something and say "That, I don't like that." But with the standards, or cafes, or naked bikes, I don't like them, just can't say why.

Might be a good platform to start with and "fix", though every Nighthawk owner and lover would probably end up lynching me.

Thank you for the option, though. That is what I am looking for, this is at least getting me to look at other bikes.

Seems like the F700GS would fit your requirements in pretty much everything except price.
