1st ride on 15/42 sprockets
I love it, THe speedo says 70, really going 65 at under 8k rpsm. Got the bike up to 90 on the speedo really 85 and I was just a bit under 10k rpms.
It is a whole hell of a lot nicer with this set up. I am sure my gas mileage is going to sufer doing this though. Thoe other thing I found great was, it's not as loud as it was. I seems to be more quite than the other set up I had. It could be the fact I had a lot of wind but it does not seem that way.

I guess I get the sprocket change if you are:
Looking to conserve fuel For some reason want to run lower revs for said speed (lots of long distance highway) want to have a higher possible top speed. race and for particular track want to be in said gear for said turns ect... I have not tried the sprocket change for a few reasons and probably won't, why? I just don't think it makes sense for the way I ride. The bike's power and fun range is 9.5k-13k rpms, with that said I will most likely be in those rpms for anything but city riding, so 15t just means I need to go faster to be in that range for a given gear, not necessarily a benefit. My bike can't pull in 6th up some of the highway hills as is with stock gearing, it would only be worse with 15t. I don't need the bike to have a higher top speed, would I like it... sure but not necessary on many levels. I guess in short YMMV, is the 15t 42t setup better than stock... not necessarily depends on what you are doing so take it all into consideration

It depends on what the goal is of the rider.
If you mostly use the bike for commuting and cruising longer gearing might be nice, but if you live somewhere that has 45 mph speed limits shorter gearing might be nice as well. I know I have a -1/+2 setup on my bike to increase RPMs. |

See a lot of my riding is high way riding with speed limits of 60-70. So going to this makes a whole lot of sense. I live int he country not in the city. So I have to drive 30 miles on the high way just to get to the city. Then I have to go another 30 miles of high way just to get to work.

^^ I will be making a similar change as well for the exact same reasons, 75% of my commute it above 60-65 mph. Why did your speedo change though, its driven off front wheel

Just because my speedometer shows you going 80 does not mean you are.
For example a couple of days ago. I am rinding earrly in the morning, rode to my self. I wanted to see if I could top out the ninja. My speedometer says I was going 100 MPH Cope pulled me over and told me I was going roughly 93 in a 70. So the speedometer is off, not sure why I just know it is.

Do you have a pre-gen, otherwise I would like to ask what that high rpm should be good for?
Please take a look at the dyno from the best and highest tuned 250 Racing-Ninja and you'll see that the highest value producing power of this engine is not above 12500 rpm (12418 rpm to be correct). |

Sure peak is lets say 12k give or take. I can't run at 12k 24/7 especially when accelerating and running the gears right? Ok when you shift the rpms drop right? right! So what happens if I shift at 12k? My rpms will drop out of the power band and I will have to build speed to get back into it, me no like. What happens if I shift at closer to 13k? The rpms drop but they drop me to a rev range that is still in the power band. Even if power drops off at 12k, at 13k I still make more power than I would at say 9.5k give or take where I would end up if I shifted at 12k, does that make sense? plus no 2 bikes are tuned the same way, you can tune your bike to run better at the higher revs, just because that particular race 250 drops off at 12k doesn't mean all bikes have to.

On my 2012 250SE stock sprockets are 14/45. I'm going to install a 41 tooth rear sprocket to drop engine speed by a factor of 41/45 = 0.91.
Currently at 9000 rpm road speed is 60 mph. After I change the rear sprocket, engine speed will be 0.91 x 9000 = 8190 rpm at 60 mph resulting in a cruising speed that puts a little less stress on the engine. It shouldn't feel overly sluggish as I have a few more ponies to pull the taller gearing with the Yoshimura full system exhaust installed. |
