Road Rage
Had a really nice ride this afternoon with four sport bike riders--three Liter Bikes, one 600, and my 250. We were cruising along at 60 in a 55 zone, and two of the 1000`s passed a car in a perfectly acceptable fashion with lots of room to pass. I was behind them and lined up for the pass since the coast was still quite clear (the guy was doing 50). When I got to his quarter panel, he accelerated and moved to the left. I dropped down two gears and started to pass. This time he tried to push me into the oncoming lane (still no cars coming for a while) and accelerating. It was pretty obvious to me that he wanted to play games. I fell back and he dropped down to 45 in a 55. One of the Liter Bikes and the 600 were with me. They also chose not to engage this guy. The guy on the 600 took out his cell and called 911 to report a dangerous driver. About five miles down the road, a sheriff responded. We stopped and reported what this guy had done. The sheriff took our statements, complemented us as to how quiet our bikes were, and wrote the jerk for reckless endangerment. We rejoined our friends. It was a good ride.

That's the way to do. Don't let emotions get the best of you. Motorbikes never win a game of chicken against cars and trucks.

Hey Now I can answer that old question. where are the cops when you need them?
Seems they were right there when you needed them. I was driving up from Halifax airport this evening and saw three on the side roads I was driving on in my rental car. There were busy up here too. Last futzed with by lockie; May 2nd, 2010 at 06:23 PM. |

That is awesome. Hope the jerk learns his lesson. I would have given him a little beep beep and a salute as I rode off. I wonder what his problem was?

Alex what are the chances of you guys not only getting a LEO in your area when you needed him, gets the guy causing the issue, and then turns out to be a fellow cyclist. It's going to be a good year for you I think

No Beep Beep. We all stopped and gave the officer statements (Five) This asshat can kiss his license good-bye for 90 days and pay a heavy fine. He will also be mandated to take an anger management course. That is the road rage law here--and there is little room for negotiation. With five affadavits giving the facts, he will have to chill out for a while. All five of us may be called on to testify if he gets a sleazy lawyer. No problem--court is only 2 blocks away--and I am retired--have lots of time. I will be more than happy to do my duty as a citizen.

It would almost be worth it to be called to court just to see his face again after he has realized how much he screwed up.

Tyler, I don`t think that it will take the court date for him to realize the consequences of his actions. A 90 day suspension is bad enough. What will cost him is the anger management training---about $75 a session--and there are lots of them.

I didn't realize how truly great this was at first. I figured it was great getting a response and action taken, but I didnt realize this guy would get nailed with classes as well. The story gets better and better! A lot of people in that situation would have gotten mad and kicked his car or followed him home (which is both illegal and dangerous), and at most cause him some money in damage. THIS however will cost him not only money, but lots of time, which is something that can't be replaces. Once again, great story and great read on teaching people the proper thing to do in that situation.

I always ride with a better head that what I drive with. I'm not in a rush on the bike. Even if I am, I am not.
I just ride much better, and stress a WHOLE LOT LESS, than I drive in my car. It is like shifting is a big inconvenience in a car. On a bike your limbs are on the controls already so, it is effortless to shift. It is just so darn convenient.

You should get that whole story and the consequences published in your local newspaper to inform/educate people about behaving like that, and maybe reach out to a wider audience in some magazine for even better exposure.

My Parrot SK4000 Bluetooth helmet kit syncs with my phone's phonebook for voice dialing. AFAIK, anything I dial has to be in my phone book. Your first post prompted me to immediately add it so that I can dial 911 while riding. Then I scrolled down and saw this.

Of course he was an idiot in the first place, so it doesn't mean he would think logically, but hopefully, even if he drives and skips classes, he will be a slightly more cautious driver, if only to not get pulled over and caught driving on a suspended license.

Beautiful!! You did your best to avoid a bad situation, the other guy wouldn't let it go, and you were able to have the proper authorities deal with him appropriately.

I am sure he will. I did do some research---bought the LEO a few beers (Belfast is so small you can walk to all the bars) The guy was charged with "Driving to endanger" That offense carries a minimum (Mandatory) 30 Day license suspension and $575 fine. The judge may decide on a more severe form of punishment in addition to the minimum, such as Anger Management classes, Community Service, or even a few days in the local jail. I do know that people are getting tired of this sort of thing happening all too frequently, and the judge may choose to respond to that sentiment by making an example of him. The fact that he was issued a summons has already been in the local paper.

Alex, I'm sure you know there is a new law in Maine regarding cell phone use while driving. If you would please send me your friend's name so I can make a formal complaint I would appreciate it. I believe all charges will be dropped against the driver of the car once the court finds out that a cell phone was used, while riding a motorcycle, to alert an officer of the law. I'm sorry to have to bring this up while everyone is on the arrest the cager bandwagon but, the law is the law.
