Trail Tech Vapor and the stock Speedo Cable
Obviously when installing the trailtech vapor you don't need the stock speedo anymore, but as I recall the stock speed cable was used as a wheel spacer. What did you guys do about the absence of a wheel spacer? Or am I remembering this incorrectly and the speed cable can be completely removed and the from wheel stay in place.

Ryan,
The cable unscrews from each end, one from the instrument cluster, the other from the speedometer drive that mounts on the wheel. You can leave the speedometer drive installed as the spacer, and just use the TrailTech magnetic bolt in the rotor. Then mount the TrailTech cable on your fork leg, at the proper spot to pick up the magnet pulse. Read the instructions carefully, and make sure the mounting doesn't interfere with the wheel or rotor/bolts. Charlie

Although I can do that, it looks tacky, and I'm going to take the drive off. If anybody had actually made a proper spacer its easier to copy then to reinvent the wheel, but I don't want to leave the drive.

Take off the part and take it to a machine shop telling them that you want just a plain spacer. I don't think anyone else has had a problem with it just being there, so this is almost surely your best option, and I don't think it'll be cheap.

An alternative to a high $$ machining job, would be to remove the knurled nut at the bottom of your speedo cable (which you're not using anymore) and re-install it on those 'tacky' threads that you don't like. Then it is a little more elegant, AND you don't have that unsightly cable down there either! I personally think I would leave it alone, and find a way to seal off the end, with the knurled nut, and a small disk of plastic inside it to act as a cap. Then no water can get in there to give you problems. Just my 2 cents worth

Off tangent here:
How would one swap out to a Vapor while retaining the front fairing? It seems like the stock cluster is involved with mounting the fairing.

It is not, the metal headlight bracket is, but you can take the stock gauges and replace them with the vapor for a clean finish.

I should mention for future people swapping to the trailtech vapor, a fellow forum member @DCMoney does make a aluminium spacer to replace the stock wheel spacer.

I didn't measure it, but I would say its a couple pounds... Actually, I know in ninja250faq somewhere, they did measure the weight of the stock speedo and speedo cable. I didn't see it, but they mentioned that the speedo cable is .5 lbs. the actual gauges feel pretty hefty to me.

Couple lbs off, lower center of gravity, cleaner look, accurate speedo, clock, other goodies. It's a win win.
