Cheap Tuner Cars (Missing a Stick)
Does anybody know anything about cheap tuner cars?
I get to drive my dads bikes or cars anytime I want, but I still have to have my own DD, and after wrecking my car I bought a jeep. I really mis the feeling of driving a car, and everytime I drive the 350z I love it. I love how its low to the ground, I love the way it handles, I love the manual transmission, I'm just a car guy. I can sell my Jeep and get a new car anytime, but I'm not sure what to get. My cousin who is a car guy says just to get a civic 5 spd, and when I have the time and money to buy a turbo in it and be in the 300whp range. (sounds cool, but I am interested in other options.) To be honest any car with a manual will make me happy again, but I would like to stay away from the muscle car scene (I'm just more of a tuner at heart).

Civic Si or Miata. They're competitors for the cheapest fun that car money can buy. Also a huge aftermarket support for both.

I think s2000 is a little out of the cheap tuner range. (Cool car though, and the 2.0 liter can take some boost). I know there are a lot of Audi's with quattro drive and a stick on CL, and its a little more me that a civic. Only question is can they really be tuned.

New have a few options. One of the most fun cars I drove was a standard Civic EX. No turbo. It wasn't fast, but the thing was fun. All that HP fades away once you make your way to an Auto-X course. I blew away Mustangs, even only coming second to a Civic Si by a mere two seconds (on a fast course too. I was practically stock, he had intake, exhaust, full suspension, super grippy road tires).
Civic Miata 350/370Z Mazdaspeed 3 Mazdaspeed Miata Ford Focus Ford Fiesta Integra Golf GTI S2K 240ZX Evo WRX WRX STi Impreza RS It all really depends on the build you want. Do you want pure handling? More HP? Or a balance? The Z is a great balanced car, but is heavy. Anything FWD is a pain at higher horsepower levels. Not to mention torque-steer is a nightmare at higher power levels unless you have a brilliant LSD. Also understeer and constantly overloaded front tires (understeer + braking + power). I'd go RWD or AWD personally, but that is me. I'm kind of done with FWD. Unless I wanted a nice NA setup (like Spoon Civic). I knew plenty who raced S2K's, but they are harder to find these days for cheap. I think you'd really enjoy an old Subaru RS. It was N/A, but they were light, crazy grippy, and fun. If you desire handling and more power, maybe an older Subie WRX, unless you wanted a 6-spd, then STi. Evo's are nice too, but Subies are known for being easy to wrench on. Tons of options out there.

Repeat after me...
Building up vehicles is a waste of my money which could be better spent on long term investments that do not depreciate rapidly/instantly in value. There is no replacement for displacement. Power to weight ratio above all else. Can't push pump gas beyond 12.5:1 compression ratio. Beyond that I have forced induction and race fuel but I'm not going to come up with something that hasn't been done before because physics are scientific laws of the universe. The more I ask of an engine, the less time it will last. If I build a beastly setup and drive it at 10% of it's ability, it will last for years. If I build a puny setup and drive it at 95% of it's ability, it will last for months. Speeding tickets are expensive. My insurance prices will go up if I get them; regardless of carrier. Getting caught doubling the speed limit in any state under any circumstance will cost me my license/ability to legally drive a motor vehicle on public roads. If I were smart, I'd find less expensive hobbies such as girlfriend, dog/cat, knitting hats for girlfriend, knitting sweaters for dog/cat, and cooking.

I'm a big fan of starting somewhere solid.
Subaru - GRIP and tons of aftermarket Evo - Same S2K - Handling game is great newer muscle cars - HP game is there with very little mods etc. For me that has always been a Mustang or old muscle car, but mainly mustang. It doesn't handle, but it has decent power, plus there is a TON of potential there. Some careful suspension mods, and a little power increase, the thing is fun. If I'm not racing a car on the track, it is more about just having fun than all around performance. Plus I love the symphony of 8-cylinders. Honestly though, I think you'd do well with an older WRX. Yes, they are 5-spd, but I did a run in one back in my Auto-X days several years ago and he had only a few mods. Upgraded brake pads, exhaust, tire upgrade and shocks, the thing gripped amazingly well. Plus it had good power with the stock turbo powerplant. Not the fastest thing out there, but it was super fun and he even admitted it was crazy fun to drive every day. It was exactly that day I became a Subaru fan.

Over here, anything under 3K is going to be a total rust bucket. (Holes in the fenders, door bottoms rotten out, underneath of the car is wasted, holes in the floor boards, etc.)

eg/ek civic, fc rx7 if you get lucky, any toyota mr2, any ford focus/fiesta, miata, none of the bmws, volvos, acura legend, VW GTI, subaru legacy/impreza, anything with a 4g63 engine if you have the experience
All off the top of my head. Nearly any car can be tuned, how much experience you need to get decent handling/power per $$$ (see honda/miata) will be the kicker. Good aftermarket helps. |

I don't know much about rotaries, but they can be ported. While porting on a piston engine is the go-to for maximizing power, porting a rotary generally is able to make them go absolutely bonkers in comparison (at the cost of driveability of course).

You're quickly moving into the unreliable, expensive and fast category with a rotary.
The apex seals on the rotors don't last long once you bridge or J port them. They don't last long in a stock motor either. Add boost? Fuggedaboutit.

Assuming this is a practical question and not just enjoyable hypothetical thought exercises, what kind of timeline and actual budget are you talking about?
The impending career you've mentioned numerous times (unless I have you thoroughly confused with another member) might add some meaningful considerations to this project car plan.
