Hearing loss
Ok I'm deaf
I lost my the hearing in my right ear when I was fourteen years old. I just woke up one morning and it felt like I had cotton in my ear. I went to a doctor and then later to a hearing aid place. The hearing aid worked but when I began riding bicycle and motorcycles full time in my twentys it got sweaty and was annoying in a helmet. Besides my left ear worked fine. Then last month I woke up and had a loss of hearing in my left ear. I would say forty percent left side sixty percent right ear plus tinnitus. A constant ringing that I guess is from tools banging and motorcycle engines. My wife wants me to go to the doctor. I feel like they will just charge me for hearing aids that cost thousands of dollars. The problem is I don't have thousands of dollars and quite frankly don't have anything that is worth thousands of dollars to hear. Does anyone have any advice ?

That's a shame... If you want to go to the doctor you could set up a go fund me page; yea I know nobody wants to ask for money, but it could help out.
I really wish I had the perfect advice for you, but at the moment I'm at a loss, I really wish you the best, and pray for healing, and comfort upon you. Everyone has struggles in life, sadly at this moment this is the hand you were dealt, so it's the one you must play. You have two options... You can be defeated or you can overcome. Your choice is up to you, an I will do anything I can to support you as much as I can in any way I can think of a long as you want me too. I say the worlds fastest ninja 250 can do anything!!! I wish I had all the answers, and the perfect one for you.

Very sorry to read this, Eric.
A visit to a specialist will put the options in black and white in front of you, in order to make intelligent decisions based on facts rather than assumptions. Try to be resilient and to keep your spirit high, my friend.

I agree with Johnny Bravo. Besides that, learn how to sign language. American Sign Language is easy to learn and quite similar with the basic Malaysian Sign Language. At least you could have some means to communicate before having a hearing aid. Besides, I sign too.

There are times I wish I couldn't hear, I know you hear some of the crazy stuff people say. Go to the doctor and see what they say, may not be as bad as you think! I always think the worst when I think of the doctors, but it's usually not so bad.

http://aslpro.com/ is a good resource, too, for the individual signs. There's a section where you can see someone actually doing the signs, since many of them involve motion and video is helpful.
I hope the docs can help you. |

I'd say it's worth the trip to the doctor to rule out things like a tumor on the auditory nerve, or other problems that shouldn't be ignored. If it comes down to the doctor suggesting a hearing aid, it's up to you whether or not you want to buy one.

Some folks aren't going to like this...
If you're a bit short on cash and don't mind pre-owned stuff, take a look on Craigslist. Several pairs for sale in my area. Keep in mind that hearing aids are often programmed to amplify some frequencies more than others (tailored for the original owner's hearing deficits) and come in three or four physical sizes. But chances are, if you try a few pairs, you'll find a set that does the job adequately. Used hearing aids clean up nicely with isopropyl alcohol. I played around with my dad's hearing aids after he died (and after I cleaned them up a bit). I was amazed at what I don't normally hear (the rain was spectacular!). Craigslist is also a cheap source for CPAP machines (for you budget-minded snorers) and walkers, portable commodes, wheelchairs, and other devices for the elderly. |

My uncle had surgery to restore some of his hearing.
Before that he used one of those devices that hanges off your neck to help amplify sound. Cost is not that bad for the amplifier and in some cases they can use implants to help hearing.

I am so sorry.
I've noticed as I get older, my hearing is getting poorer, especially trying to hear in an environment with a noisy background. It's frustrating. Not sure if it's a result of motorcycling or just getting older. Do you have an update from your doctor visit?

She believes that I am not ignoring her .
Right ear is dead and not going to get better. Left ear is below the level of normal in the low tones then drops down very low in the area of normal speech. Then picks up again. They said a hearing aid would be helpful and I should come back in a year or if anything changes. Hearing aids are not going to work for me. First it's the 2000 dollars bit. I would rather not spend that sort of money. Second is the battery part. I just don't want to fool around chasing batteries and having to deal with the little toy and having it break or need cleaning or programing or what ever. So that's it. Sign language is only good if someone else understands it. So it won't be a be much help in daily life. I am still going to learn it. And I need to protect the hearing I have now. I guess the new exhaust on the race bike is not the best

I have every sympathy, I have hearing damage from my guitar amp which spontaneously went into 100 watt oscillation (not feedback) luckily not at a gig or I would have been sued to oblivion.
The tinnitus whistle, if it isn't too bad, you filter out after a year or so, but crowded room conversation is now difficult to impossible. Like you I have considered a hearing aid but frankly have my doubts because 1, I don't want to blast the heck out of what hearing is left 2, Your brain seems to adjust over time, even though the audiogram looks the same. When it happened I couldn't even hear the tone difference between a Strat and a Les Paul (guitarists will know what I mean) but now I can again there has been a neural compensation of some kind. Contrary to the 'doctor knows best' advice I would recommend living with it for a while and see how your brain adapts (unless obviously it is an infection or something clinically treatable ) Hope that helps |

Why can't they make an I phone app? You put on head phones with a cord and a mic. Then use the phone to adjust side to side or cross over as they call it . And with a little graphic equalizer just adjust your settings until you are happy. Also have it blue tooth to a TV so you can watch TV in a room full of people talking? Why is that so impossible?

In reality all guitar sounded dead and muffled like they were playing in the next room. Though it did get a lot better, say 50% over the following year. I really hope racer X improves too because the real difficulty is the crowded social conversation thing. People expect you to laugh or respond to something they said and truth is you couldn't make it out so you just laugh or frown when the others do. |

Set the volume control on your hearing aids as freakin low as you can possibly have them and still be useful. I think in general, people are turning their hearing aids up too far and this in turn is slowly damaging their hearing more over time. I don't believe doctors are doing enough to help end users set proper levels of their hearing aids and it's doing damage. Remove your hearing aids when you don't need them in, and still protect the hell out of what little hearing you have left. When you ride bikes you need to have the highest decibel cut earplugs you can get, generally 31-33db NRR. Just some notes from an audio engineer who loves his own hearing and mows his lawn wearing shooters hearing protection.
