Turn any clothing into protective gear?
Ruste Protection is a company in Finland that will take your ordinary clothing and sew in a Kevlar and Coolmax lining, along with pockets for armor if desired. Sounds like an interesting concept. Thoughts?

Proper gear (i.e. gear that holds together in a crash) is constructed differently from ordinary clothing. The seams are different. The thread is (probably) different. Done right, it's not just about adding a layer of kevlar.
Good stuff here. http://www.worsewear.com/site/seams/ And here: http://www.bysonleather.co.uk/BYSON%...utLeathers.htm Quote:

To be fair, I don't think anyone expects the outer layer to hold up to anything at all when it's normal clothing (they don't do leather or other extra heavy stuff) so the stitching on it probably doesn't matter when it'll immediately shred anyway.
I suppose the key point then would be how well the kevlar layer itself is constructed.

So the Kevlar panels are stitched to an outer shell that is nothing but a pair of ordinary jeans. If the outer shell falls apart or abrades away where the kevlar is attached, what happens?
Say the Kevlar is stitched really, really well to your cotton jeans. We know that cotton sucks for abrasion. The seam itself can be well designed and stitched with the very best kevlar thread, but if the material on the other side of that seam fails, then by definition the whole thing fails. From a common sense standpoint, it seems to me that all the critical aspects of a garment... the seams, the thread, the material on both sides of the seam... must be crashworthy to call the whole thing crashworthy. Chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and all that. If that is true, then a panel of kevlar sewn into a garment that itself cannot survive a crash is therefore not going to magically create something that will survive. This is one reason why I'm skeptical about riding jeans. They may be fine for an off at low speed, but going down at any respectable velocity? Really, really not sure about that. IMHO the idea of a layered garment made of various kinds of sacrificial fabric -- which is what riding jeans are -- makes sense in principle. But for it to really work, I believe there has to be a solid layer somewhere in there that will hold together and resist abrasion. Such a product does exist... kevlar long-johns. But once you go there, you're getting right back into the territory that makes you want to buy riding jeans in the first place: comfort, or lack thereof. Full disclosure: I've only gone full-leather in the past few years. Before that I did a whole 2600 mile tour using Kevlar long underwear and some Fieldsheer overpants (which I still use when the weather is really foul or cold). Didn't go down, of course, so no first-hand knowledge. But in between the stout overpants and the solid kevlar layer beneath, I felt well protected. Downsides: Not exactly street clothes, plus the overpants were loose enough that armor could shift. Upsides: Weather resistance. Somewhat lower cost than leathers.

Don't worry I like my full moto gear and that's not changing soon
It just seemed like something that might work for those who don't get full gear for one reason or another as it's still probably better than nothing at all.

Basically my impression of it. At least kevlar is known to provide a certain degree of protection over regular clothes, even if it's not the best. If it comes down to it, I'd rather someone wear kevlar lined regular clothing with armor over nothing at all.

To be fair, it does look like they're doing a good job... appears to be a full, or nearly full, lining, held together with kevlar thread. So they've got the multi-layer, sacrificial outer shell thing going on. That means it's a one-crash garment, but that's par for the course with these things.
This is definitely a fashion/lifestyle choice, due to cost. You're not saving a dime over dedicated leather riding pants. Cost for altering your jeans, with pockets for armor: $193 US (149 GBP). Cost for knee armor: $31 US Cost for hip pads: $27 US Grand total $251 plus the cost of jeans, whatever that is, plus about $25 shipping to the US. Currently, the AGV Sport Willow perforated leather pants (which include armor, of course) that I wear go for $219, free shipping. I wonder about some of their marketing. I have a hard time believing that this young woman is wearing kevlar-lined jeans.

I think part of the appeal is having something that you know will fit since off the rack stuff can be an issue for people who don't have a standard body shape.
I'm pretty sure none of those models are wearing the lined kevlar lined pants. Maybe they're wearing them without armor. Can't avoid the slight bulk of hip armor when it's there

It was "the thing" here in Malaysia before this... Most of the leather shops do pants alteration starting from leather, kevlar, cordura or even denims... Until the bootlegged riding jeans of Komine came in. You could get one of these at $50 rather than spending $100 for an altered pants.
Had an experience wearing mesh + cordura jacket and fell down. Didn't tear apart, speed was around 30 to 40 mph and was sliding into a ditch, so i guess it's equivalent if you are not going for 62 mph. But definitely it is safer wearing leathers and getting one fully equipped with armour besides than having altered for you.
